It has been suggested to me that we migrate Ipse Dixit to a Facebook group, the argument being that it presents a better, nicer user interface. I would like members' feedback on that suggestion. Full disclosure: I am a member of a Facebook group, which I started, and I think the user interface is good. But I also rarely even use Facebook—my primary purpose in having an account is keeping tabs on my deceased sister's daughter, of whom I share guardianship responsibilities.

I'm for better, nicer user interfaces.  At least I think I am.

I think Facebook has the worst user experience provided by any major web site. It’s buggy, inconsistent, unreliable, and if it fell in the creek we’d be skimming ugly for a month. If so many people weren’t on it I’d never use it. I can only barely tolerate it because I use this to fix some of the more obnoxious parts of the UI:

http://www.fbpurity.com/

But my actual vote is “whatever”. I could use it for this about as well as Google Groups. Just be aware that since Facebook is apparently designed to never give you the same feed two devices or sessions in a row one never knows if one will actually see the content one expects.

I can't speak to the UI as not having used it.  I'm not on Facebook and am in no hurry to join, I assume you need to be a member to participate in a group?

If a nicer UX is the goal, Facebook is pretty much the antithesis.
Were there particular UX improvements named in the suggestion?

Cheers,
David.

Point of clarification: I think the interface for groups is good. I think Google's is fine, too.

There are also competing privacy concerns. I have my opinions concerning both Facebook;s and Google's, but will forgo expressing them, at least for now, pending other members' comments.

My personal preference for Facebook starts with its rich interface, see attachment, whereby a starting post/image remains visible whereas in Google posts from members show as one long stream of separate discussions.

Facebook has a more personal feel with profile pictures and About etc.

Facebook allows you to “follow” threads of interest with notifications, also chatting, doc sharing, photo sharing and event scheduling from within the same location.

Facebook allows a more convenient way to edit post, you can unring the bell.

My strongest criticism of Facebook are ads on the right side of the page, I guess that is the price for everything else being free.

I would suggest that the price may be much higher than that... :)

In any case, I don't use Facebook, but I've had good luck with Adblock Plus,
which appears to do a pretty good job with FB annoyances:

All extremists should be taken out and shot.

This reminds  me of an actual statement put out by the government of Nepal when they returned to "democracy" after years of military rule in the mid 90s:

"This election will put us on the path to democracy.  Anyone interfering with the polls will be shot."

Well, Julian, it seems the masses, both washed and unwashed, have spoken: we'll remain on Google Groups for now. Thanks for the suggestion.

And thanks to everyone else who contributed their opinion on the matter.
