Does the group have views or preferences on Variprop, Maxprop and Kiwiprop or other feathering props. I have a fixed three prong prop on a 30U which appears slow in light winds but reaches theoretical boat speed quite easily. Should I switch to feathering or consider folding?

Hi Mirthin,

This season I went from a fixed 3 blade prop to a 2 blade Flex o Fold prop behind my 25hp Beta and sail drive.

I chose this prop based on a friend’s satisfaction with the same prop, the price (I would have preferred a 3 blade folding) and my paranoia for crab traps. My other paranoia, fear of it not opening when going into reverse, has been unfounded.

There is a bit more vibration over the 3 blade, nothing alarming and the performance is excellent. I am very pleased with it.

Good evening

I have the original two blade folding prop from my former 1981 30c which was paired with the sail drive paired with the original volvo md11c if there is any interest. It is in very good condition.

I've had a Gory two blade for over 20 years and am quite happy with my
racing and motoring performance.

Hi Nicholas
I happen to have a used Brunton Autoprop three blade feathering prop sitting in my garage these past 4 years. It was ultimately replaced with a fixed 3 blade to accomodate the quirks of the electric motor installed in 2019.  If you would like to buy it I am asking $1500+ shipping. Bearings were replaced in 2016 and it was painted with anti-foul at that time.  A new one costs about US$3900.

Or, I also have a 3 blade feathering Kiwi prop for which I am asking $900+shipping, also sitting in my garage!  I think a new one is about $2000.  It too was not compatible with the electric drive.

Both props are about 14 or 15 inch, RH, 1 inch tapered shaft typical to NS30's

If interested send me a note.

Jim

I use the vari-prop. It adds a “thunk” when put in gear unfortunately. It does however provide better fuel consumption and higher speed at lower RPM s. Seems like the boat moves faster if I put it in gear instead of neutral when racing. Perhaps it folds back better that way.
