I have been hosting the Thursday night Hacker Happy Hour on Zoom for the last year and need to focus my attention elsewhere for a while. I will no longer be able to host Thursday nights and need someone to step up and take it over if it is to continue. Unfortunately, since I host it with my company's Zoom business account I am unable to make anyone outside my organization an alternative host.

Whoever decides to host Thursday nights will need at minimum a Zoom Pro account which allows for meetings longer than 40 minutes and will need to generate a new meeting link for everyone. Zoom Pro is $15/mo. for month to month subscription or $12.50/mo. if you pay for it annually.

I have no Hacker Happy Hour planed for this Thursday (March 11th).

Thanks for understanding,
Shane

FYI if no-one steps up, maybe a meetup admin could remove the meetings =

There is one listed for March 11th!

I think a fun project would be to get past Zoom, maybe set up a server somewhere for OpenVidu, Jitsi, etc.
I would host but our internet is awful here in this high noise industrial area.

Anyone have some fat pipes?

As an interim - until we can find a sponsor/holder of a Zoom Pro account. We can 'daisy chain' the 45 minutes freebie accounts.

One starts (is one published), as we get close to the close time - next freebie account posts up a link in chat to theirs, lather, rinse, repeat. It's a Kludge, but it mostly works - for a bit. Fewer people show up - shorter the gathering.

I set up a Jitsi server last year for NSL (but we've since moved to
discord video chat). It's on some bro-colo in downtown LA w/ a gig port.

It's here if anyone wants to play with it:
https://meet.nofoxresearch.com/ - send me an email and i'll find the
username/pass to create conferences and I'll do software update and
restart (java app probably leaking memory sitting unused for the past 8
months).

I think I still have my pro zoom account if I do I’ll let someone use it I can setup meetings into the future even though I haven’t been on one yet lol. But if I’m still paying for mine it’s just sitting there.

Interesting, have not used Jitsi yet or OpenVidu. Discord seems to work pretty well, but I have only been in small groups of about 5 people. I am not aware of the limitations of the free versions of discord.

I have had good luck running a NextCloud server with the 'Talk' app installed, the latest version seems smoother and now supports mac peoplz. Maybe it is too much work since it is more of a collaboration platform.

Looks like the Discord video chat limit is 50 participants. Since it is in place maybe a good place to start until the alternative is ready?

Our free Discord server could easily handle everything we do. The only thing the paid tiers get you is higher resolution screen sharing, custom emoji, larger file transfers, and possibly better audio quality.
We are barely using screen sharing as is, almost never share files (which we can do via Google Drive), and I've been using the MAGlab Discord and haven't noticed any difference in audio quality.

If one really wants the extra features, they have $5 and $10 per month tiers, or paid discord users can give their "boosts" to 23b, although I think that works out to cost a lot more.

I like free, and we already have a Discord. We could always try it out and see how we like it, and if we don't go to something else.

Here is the link to the 23b Discord, for folks who aren't on it yet: https://discord.gg/CHXgPKbE

It is now Thursday, so we should probably decide something.
I was sort of hoping that other keyholders might weigh in, but time is up.
I'm not going to be around forever, but I guess I can take point on this one for now.

While we have several folks weighing in willing to donate access to another Zoom account, I feel like sooner or later that will expire and we will be back in the same situation again.

So I'd like to move us to Discord. It's free. It has video chat. Works well enough. Doesn't require anybody to pay up, but gives us the option to pay for upgraded service if we need it.  The Discord thing doesn't require constant maintenance or anybody to be in charge of it. Anybody can use it at any time.

Here is how you do it:

If you haven't already, go download Discord.
https://discord.com/download
It should run on most things. Windows, Mac, Linux, Android, and iOS are all supported.

Then join the 23b server.
https://discord.gg/Hc2uq4Eq

(Instructions for PC versions... mobile versions may be different.)
On the left side, there are a bunch of channels. Above "Events" is one called "General Voice Chat".
Click on that. Then Click on it again to get the video view up.
On the left, click the "Video" button to turn your camera on.

You can adjust your camera and audio / headset settings with the Gear icon next to your name on the bottom left.
When you want to leave the chat, move the mouse over the chat windows and tap the red phone icon to hang up. Note that, even if you go to another text channel, you will still be attached with voice and video until you do that.

Anyway, I'll be there tonight (Thursday) from 8:30pm. Hopefully folks can join me!

Shane, if you could update the Meetup event to explain this, or give me access to the Meetup again so that I can make a new event with the proper info, that would be swell.

I know it is kinda annoying to jump to a new thing, but I think this will be more stable for us long-term.

I'll just give my opinion on it and say that Discord does sound like a better platform for this. It doesn't completely rely on one person always donating time (and money), like Zoom does

An external opinion - it has worked pretty well for us at SYNShop as well. Also, you can use it entirely from the web browser if you don't want to install a client on your computer, which is also nice.

I feel much more included with a Discord since I cannot make Zoom meetings right now.

I'll be there Tim!

Look'n forward to seeing everyone.

Not sure how to do this next bit, but if anyone is needing a hand with getting Discord setup - reach out here and we'll get a jump on it.
