After Ramraj raised this point, I asked our 'aatthu vaajyaar' or family priest for short.
Most modern Brahmins are not fully aware of Sastras and in fact some orthodox people like Ramraj know more, like I always tell Ramraj...
Here is the answer:
  1. Amavasya is used for activities relating to ancestors.
  2. It is a day of great power. Any fasting or prayer done on that day is powerful
  3. It is ok to start a new educational course, or to join a new company or start a new business on that day.
  4. BUT IT IS NOT SUITABLE FOR SUBHA KARYAM SUCH AS MARRIAGE, KAADHU KUTHU FUNCTION etc.
  5. So it is good for prayer and fasting primarily
Ok
what my North Indian friends told about what their priest told...
  1. Married couples  should not screw on Amavasya day - to avoid conception on Amavasya day.
  2. Since conception during Amavasya day breeds Rakshasic feelings, I was told.
  3. Now, here is what Garuda Purana says about New moon - AMAVASYA and full moon day "The highest duty of a woman is to carry out the behests of her husband. Sixteen nights subsequent to the month menstrual flow are the nights of rut for women. The husband shall restrain himself during the parvan (full moon and new moon days), when the stars Magha and Mula are ascendant and on the first four nights. Thereafter, on even nights, he will be able to beget a healthy son of auspicious traits. If the woman is in a mood to receive him on any night he should satisfy her remembering that lust in women is terrible."
  4. So  note the last line.. :-) if Ladies WANT, even the Gods say better to do what they say. in fact there is another line that says that all the wishes of a married women should be fulfilled as long as they are good wishes ( what is good is whatever does not damage society or reputation)
  5. The above line shows that our Holy scriptures also are quite practical, they acknowledge the different natures of men and women. Acknowledge that sex was a way of life just as other activities but at the same time did not give undue importance to it. Only thing is they say avoid on Amavasya day.
  6. I am not deviating from the topic but saying this is all there seems to be for amavasya day.
  7. Punch DIALOG - "
"Don't have sex during amavasya, purnima, Shivaratri or Holi. A child conceived on these days will be born handicapped,"
  8. Who said this? Just guess....SEE below

When one of my friends wanted to register a new house, the vadhyar told him to go ahead on Amavasya, but the selling party, who was a Gujarathi dissented and said not possible since it is amavasya.

My opinion is that this is completely arbitrary and has no bearing on what happens later. Ancestor worship is anyway for generally feeling good about ourselves, so does not matter when you do it – having a fixed calendar enables Vadhyars to program their schedules, that is all.

Regarding Krishna – considering that concept of Krishna and Bhakthi has been created quite late in time, in my opinion, around the Gupta period, and considering the number of stories that have been added, modified etc to the original folklore, we cannot add any absolute value to the stories.

I would repeat, mooda nambikkai is good if we understand the mooda part completely!

Vaidi.
