Currently the abstract is retrieved from the following meta tags in order of priority:
eprints:abstract
prism:teaser
og:description
bibo:abstract
dcterms:abstract
dc:description.abstract
dcterms:description.abstract
description
where namespaces refer to
bibo:"
http://purl.org/ontology/bibo/",
dc:"
http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/",
dcterms:"
http://purl.org/dc/terms/",
prism:"
http://prismstandard.org/namespaces/1.2/basic/",
or "
http://prismstandard.org/namespaces/basic/2.0/",
or "
http://prismstandard.org/namespaces/basic/2.1/",
eprints:"
http://purl.org/eprint/terms/",
og:"
http://ogp.me/ns#"
If you're not using anything from eprints or prism, I think dcterms:abstract would make the most sense for you. "description" is a common meta tag, but we find that often it is not filled out properly, while unlikely, it may be dropped in the future.

We are working on setting up meta tags in our HTML header to enable both indexing by Google Scholar and Zotero support. We are using Highwire Press tags (the ones that start with citation_ ) - but we do not have our abstracts available via a separate URL (as we would need to use the citation_pdf_url tag).
What does Zotero look for in the HTML to identify the abstract text? Do we need to add microformat style tags within the main HTML or is there a citation_ tag (or other tag) we should be using in the header?
Thanks!
