Is anyone using weewx with a Davis Wireless Envoy / Envoy 8x connected by a serial data logger? I'd like to use this setup with both a wireless ISS and a wireless leaf wetness / temp. station.

Cheers,
Ken

I'm using an Envoy, but it has a USB logger. Works great, including with an extra wireless temperature sensor.

The only tricky part is configuring the hardware. It doesn't have any buttons, so you have to do it by software. You can either use the Davis supplied software "WeatherLink", or you can use the weewx configuration utility.

Generally, the only things that have to be configured is the altitude and the archive interval.

Thanks Tom.

I was just about to purchase an Envoy 8x, when I found a bulletin on the Davis site that implies the Envoy 8x is a different beast than the original Envoy and probably not compatible with weeex:

"The software interface that is used to communicate with, setup, configure and download data from the Envoy 8X is the Weather Data Transfer Utility for Envoy8X software CD included in this package.

The WeatherLink software that comes with the WeatherLink data logger should not be used to setup, configure and download data from the Envoy 8x. It should be only used to import data from the DTU software and to plot and graph this imported data.

Do not attempt to use WeatherLink to communicate with the Envoy8X. The Weather Data Transfer Utility for Envoy8X software must be used to communicate with the Envoy 8X."

So I'll stick with the regular Envoy.

Thanks,

Ken

I completely missed that. I didn't realize that the 8x was so different. Unfortunately, it appears that they haven't documented the new interface.

You know, I could understand if they either stuck with the old interface (which they 'sort of' did with the IP logger), or went to a more modern HTTP based RESTful interface, but a completely new one?

Sigh.

I believe this is known as "making things better" ;)

I was surprised as well, considering how well documented the communication protocol has been up until now, and how DIY-friendly all the other Davis products are.

For anyone that's interested:

My Wireless Envoy arrived, along with a Wireless Leaf & Soil Moisture/Temperature station and all the sensors. I wired up the sensors with the new unit, pulled the Serial Datalogger from my VantageVue console, installed it in the Envoy, did the initial Enoy setup using the Weatherlink software, added the new leaf/moisture/temprature fields in the Standard skin template html files, and everything was working beautifully! I'm seeing data from the ISS, the Envoy's humidity/barometric/temperature sensors, and the leaf/soil moisture/temperature station, no fuss no muss.

Thanks again for writing such great and easy to work with software, Tom.

Cheers,
Ken

Is the Envoy 8x still a no go with weewx?

I have one and a 7 station setup with 2 leaf, 4 soil, and one ISS.  Am I out of luck to use linux/MySql/weewx?

thanks,
Chris

Unfortunately, the Envoy 8X is not supported.

Hi,

I have a similar system to that which Tom and Ken C discuss in this thread --- where I have a Vantage Pro2 system using a regular Envoy to talk wirelessly to my ISS and to talk via USB to the computer running weewx.  I also have a console in a separate location in the house that talks wirelessly to the ISS.  Weewx collects and reports the 'Inside Temperature' measured by from my Envoy, which regretfully is not terribly far from my somewhat leaky front door.  My console therefore reports a different 'Indoor Temperature'.

I'm curious whether there is a way to have weewx additionally collect the console's 'Inside Temperature' so that I can calculate and report an 'Average Inside Temperature' inside weewx?

Perhaps this has already been discussed somewhere, but I haven't found it.  Could this simply be accomplished by 'Adding a new observation type' following:

?   However, if so I'm not clear how to tell weewx to look for the alternate data source (i.e. the console).

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Ned

You could talk to both your Envoy and the console at the same time, but it would require you to run two instances of weewx. They can run on the same computer, but they have to be two complete, independent instances.

Each would have its own database.

One of the instances would be responsible for generating the reports. Because it's possible to pull in data from multiple databases in a report, you would be able to generate, say, a plot of inside temperature from your Envoy, and another one from your console.

There would be ambiguity problem because they are in different databases, so no need to do the technique of "Adding a new observation type."

But, if you have that kind of connectivity with the console, why not just use it exclusively? I mean, what's the Envoy for?

Or, you could just fix the leaky door. :-)

Thanks Tom... I think you provided the necessary clue. My console is not physically connected to any computer. The console is in a different part of the house, in a location that prevents running a USB cable to a computer -- hence the Envoy. I was trying to figure out if I could somehow pull the 'Inside Temperature' wirelessly from the remotely-located console.

Wish I could fix the 'leaky' door. It's really not leaky but rather is simply the house's original 1949 uninsulated solid-core door that tends to take on the outside temperature (who's look and feel my wife likes).

Cheers,

Ned

You could use one of those USB <-> Cat5 <-> USB extenders. Like this.

NB: I've never actually tried one.
