So, if you've been watching the feed over on github, you'll have seen a *lot* of activity from me on the website. I've been working to convert it to a static site, built via sphinx. I'm going to deploy it to a beta site tomorrow night (I want to be able to focus on it from the start, and right now my focus is shot for the night).

If you want to check out the results, though, you can. Check out the repository, and run the buildsite.sh script. Be forewarned that it will take some time, since it builds the entire site, all docs, sets up packages, etc. Right now, a first run for me takes about 15 minutes.

I'll show it off tomorrow, but right now is not the time.

Well, that was a fun night, really. I managed to screw up my home system somehow, which left me struggling with that for far too long. I've gotten the ball rolling for the new site, but it's still not visible yet. I will be aiming for tomorrow night, but friday/saturday nights can be difficult to get things done. I'll try.

Okay, it's up and running. It's nearly a total copy of the previous version of the site, but it's built with Sphinx and reStructuredText. It's visible at http://beta.turbogears.org/

I need to ask people to look it over, and help me spot what's broken. I'm sure there's plenty of it that I haven't caught yet.

Christoph and Alessandro, I'll get your keys copied over sometime this weekend.

Oh, and by the way everybody, one thing that would be even more appreciated than bug reports is fixes. The repo for the website is at https://github.com/TurboGears/tgwebsite so it can be forked, and pull requests sent in. As to how this copy of the site was built? Simple. There's a script at the top level, named "buildsite.sh". I ran that script. It generates all the static files for me.

I'm going to streamline it a bit, but that's the main gist, right there. If you've got something you want to see fixed, either report it, or fork it and fix it. It all works for me :)

I like it!

Just a little suggestion, on "The CogBin" page maybe move all the
"keywords" stuff on the top of the page onto another page and link to it
or move it to the bottom as I think that most people are interested in
the tables shown further down.

Mh...
Since the theme is loosely based on the old quickstart template, wouldn't it be worth considering using Twitter Bootstrap here, too, to have a consistent look between the TG homepage and TG projects?

Cheers,
Moritz

Nice, thanks for working on this. Unfortunately, I'll not be able to
contribute much this year. But I hope others jump in now that everything
is on github and collaboration is easier than ever.

I noticed that the videos on the welcome page do not work. Youtube says
they have been removed for being too long. Strange, I thought there is
no limitation any more on YouTube?

great  work. the static sphinx site is noticeably faster.
some problems I noticed:
1. the static site (as is the original site) - not responsive in any way.. even in the most basic. try resizing the browser. or watching the site in a wide screen.
2. the content overflow after the side menu is really not asthetic, the text going below the menu.  the original site does it better.
3. the original site has menu color changes in :hover and static hasn;t
4. plus one for the bootstrap design Idea

I'm not sure I can fix this by myself, since I never worked with sphinx myself  but maybe someone else can helo with this.

Replying to everybody all at once:

Cogbin issues: Those need to be fixed. It should be more obvious that the keywords are clickable links to get to the right tables. It's not, and that's bad styling, I admit.

Switching to bootstrap, changing the doc themes: Lovely idea. Right now, my goal is to make the site something that's more easily updated, while still being as close as possible to the current design. These things need changing, but I'm not going to tackle them right now.

Youtube videos: I thought I'd made that account able to accept long videos. I'll dig into that and get it fixed.

The content overflow: Can you give me a concrete example of what you mean? Right now, I don't know which page I can look at, or what elements on that page, to see what you're discussing. Without that, I don't know how to try to fix it.

The color changes for the menu items: You're right, and I'll try to fix that. Not sure I will know *how* with Sphinx, but I'll try.
