I need a device that works like a wifi router but instead of taking the wifi and pushing to a wired gateway

I need to take an ethernet wired connection and push it over a wifi link

I have been looking at routers and they all forward to wired links that I can see as the default direction of network flow

I need the opposite

Is it possible?

Even the option of a usb wifi ap chip would work if it comes with enough docs or sources for a driver with firmware image

I'm not sure I totally understand but it sounds like want is a wifi device running
in client mode that bridges between Ethernet and Wifi.

I've done this before using OpenWrt on a Wrt54g access point. I think there are
commercial access points that will do this too.

There is a device we used for the nGeigies to be able to connect to wifi using ethernet arduino shields.

This thing can be used as an ethernet to wifi bridge.

Get an AirportExpress and configure it to extend the wireless network.
If you only need 1 port then your done. if you need more than 1
port, I'm not sure of an answer. I know the Airport Express works
because I do exactly what you are talking about here at my house for
my wife's old computer with the broken wifi.

What you're looking for sounds like a ethernet/wifi bridge. A bridge
basically performs as a wired ethernet extender. As Nava said, this is
called a wireless bridge or in WRT terminology, client bridge mode. Most
WiFi routers will support this, and as Robin mentioned, we're using this
cheapo 2500 yen WiFi router, putting it in bridge mode, and using it on the
nGeigies for our sensor network.
