Just got off a 4 hour gaming binge with a friend, playing minecraft.
Im a total newb, but it sure is fun.

Would be great to have a games server running in the THS closet, so
that he doesnt have to leave it running on his computer... and we
could host a bunch more.

One thing a few hackerspaces do is a monthly games compo. Might be fun
to break out Starcraft and the like.

You could not fathom the level of interest I have for this thread.

Do you need a game server or is the equipment already available?

For most games, especially older ones, we dont need a whole lot of
power..
Considering that not many people will be on it at once, a low-mid
range system could work out fine.
It would only be taxed during a compo session.. But we could always
run additional servers during those times.

I think those interested should get together one night and hack
something together. Between myself, THS and others who are interested,
we should have enough parts to build a dedicated computer and hook it
up in the closet.

Only question would be getting the IT group to set the rooters to port
forward the ports we want opened.

I wonder if minecraft server will allow for multiple games/worlds?

Sure sure..

Was thinking of a crafter contest at some point in the future.

Anyway lots of options for a ths game server.

In the past, I've looked at the possibility of using Minecraft as a
simulator for kids for designing how they wish their community might
develop, because people have made tools to convert geographical data
into Minecraft maps.

Otherwise I think it is far too addictive for me to go near it ;)

Agreed... I have been thinking of educational possibilities too..
which is bad.. because it indicates that I am trying to justify my
time playing it.

when you google "minecraft item crafting" while waiting for a train,
you might have a problem.
(I did that today)

Apparently, playing the game causes a serotonin uptake inhibitor to be
injected into your blood stream via your mouse.
