Hello Jeremy, et al,

I have a couple of questions with this:

1.  My long standing irritation, though a minor one, while using TiddlyWiki with the browsers is that I cannot run a system command through Javascript.  For example, on Windows, I cannot open a Explorer window to browse a folder.  It is understandable that the TiddlyFox extension won't change that.  But is that something that can be added through this extension (though I have never written a Firefox extension in my life time, if it is feasible, I will try to learn that black-art).

2.  The second issue is HTML5 support.  I assume all that I need to do to be able to use HTML5 features in my plugins is to use browser that supports HTML5.  Is that not correct?  Do I need to upgrade to HTML5 core (which I notice is under development)?

3.  If I have to upgrade to HTML5 core to use HTML5 features as in the previous question -  right now I am using version major: 2, minor: 6, revision: 2 of the core - will my plugins continue to work with the new core without modifications or at least, will there be a way to migrate them?

Thanks for your time.

Cheers; 'best,

Hi Shankar

Thanks for your questions,

It is possible for a Firefox extension to invoke system commands, as illustrated in this venerable blog post:

However, I'm not sure that I'd be inclined to add the feature to TiddlyFox itself, for fear that it turns into a ragbag of security holes. Instead, my thinking is to keep TiddlyFox tightly focussed on enabling HTML/JS apps to save changes to themselves.

2.  The second issue is HTML5 support.  I assume all that I need to do to be able to use HTML5 features in my plugins is to use browser that supports HTML5.  Is that not correct?  Do I need to upgrade to HTML5 core (which I notice is under development)?

That is correct, you just need an HTML5 compliant browser. The TiddlyWiki5 core code is somewhat tuned to take advantage of the new facilities of HTML5, but TiddlyWiki classic still works fine on HTML5 browsers.

3.  If I have to upgrade to HTML5 core to use HTML5 features as in the previous question -  right now I am using version major: 2, minor: 6, revision: 2 of the core - will my plugins continue to work with the new core without modifications or at least, will there be a way to migrate them?

The TiddlyWiki5 core is not compatible with TiddlyWiki classic. The core code is completely rewritten for flexibility and efficiency, and so old plugins will not work. In fact, the wiki syntax itself is also not fully compatible.

Best wishes

Jeremy

Thanks for your time.
