If you have the time, consider an overnight trip to the Dry Tortugas. It's a series of islands 70 miles west of Key West. You'll either need to take a ferry or fly and the accommodations are primitive - camping only, but it's worth it. The scenery and fishing is fantastic. The chances of hooking into one the big three are good, plus there are plenty of good sized snapper, barracuda, and sharks to play with. If you go, be sure to bring a kayak with you (there are plenty of places that will drop off and pick up your kayak at the ferry dock). The total cost will be much lower than $900 day trip you mentioned. You can probably get away with $300-$400 for one or two nights. Check this out for more information:
