Key West

Yo!

I am going to be in Key West in July and would like to play with my new 9-wt rod. Is there anywhere you can wade in or a few mile-markers north of Key West? I'd love to go out blue water for dolphin, but even smaller center-console boats want $900 for a full day. I'd fly to labrador for that kind of money.

Any assistance is appreciated.

A little north of Bahia Honda State Park (where you can also wade) are 2 small keys that have good wading and access to all the major species.

 

Kayak rental places are all over from key west north, so getting in a kayak and exploring the mangroves, etc is another way.  Bring some wire leaders for the barracuda - prolific and fun.

Has anyone tried out Cunningham Falls state park? Wife and I are thinking of camping there this weekend.

Hey guys,

 

Will be spending some time there next year this time.  Would I be able to get by wading with my 7 wieght 10 ft?  I know it will be lighter than the norm and I would have to work harder to cast the longer distances with heavier flies but I am wondering if I could get by with it.

Thanks for the support. Have you been down there before?  Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.  I will have to do a good amount of research to find out what is out there at this time of the year, what strategies to take for going after them and which flies to bring/buy among others.  I don't expect anyone to have all of the answers but I got a year to pick multiple people's brains. :)  Super excited about the idea.

I have a buddy who lives down there who has caught a fair amount of
snook and tarpon fishing around the various small bridges in Key West.
Could be worth a shot.

Not sure the names of them though and where access would be.

In addition to seaching fly forums around the net for info on new locations, I found some great information from the local guides and charter companies websites.  They may not give away all their secrets but they are still a wealth of knowledge.  A quick google search on "key west fly fishing guides" yeilded a number of sites with info on fly patterns, a few techniques, and a couple species calendars.  Additionally, I can't tell you how much useful info I've received from Google and Youtube -- and how much time I've wasted on both.  Best of luck when you get down there.

If you have the time, consider an overnight trip to the Dry Tortugas.  It's a series of islands 70 miles west of Key West.  You'll either need to take a ferry or fly and the accommodations are primitive - camping only, but it's worth it.  The scenery and fishing is fantastic.  The chances of hooking into one the big three are good, plus there are plenty of good sized snapper, barracuda, and sharks to play with.  If you go, be sure to bring a kayak with you (there are plenty of places that will drop off and pick up your kayak at the ferry dock).  The total cost will be much lower than $900 day trip you mentioned.  You can probably get away with $300-$400 for one or two nights.  Check this out for more information: http://www.nps.gov/drto/index.htm

        I am definately interested in this.  Do me a favor and e-mail me at aa...@jorgeinc.com with any suggestions for the flats to target.   I don't own a kayak so I will have to fish off of the shore unless I somehow pick up  a kayak in the next year.  Thinks a inflatable kayak would work well for this since I could easily pack it in the rental car and then onto the ferry.
