I fished the Occoquan two days ago.  I didn't have a single striper bite.  I am thinking that, by the way the river fished last year, that they should be in here soon.  The biggest issue is that the river isn't flowing like it did last year.  It is like there isn't any water flowing form the dam.  I am hoping that it starts flowing soon because that seems to be a big part of the stripers coming up the river.

Has anyone seen any stripers at Gravelly point yet on the falling tide?

I caught a striper at Great Falls park, fisherman's eddy about 3 weeks ago. That probably doesn't count though.

Two weeks ago at GP I picked up two within my first half-dozen casts, one of which was ~17" -- one of the bigger guys I've caught there.  But those were my only catches over two outings.  Still pretty quiet.

Thanks for the responses.  I fear that if the Occoquan river doesn't start flowing we won't have the migration of banded killifish that draws the stripers into the river.  I don't understand why they are holding the water back in the dam.  Are we in a drought stage or something?

The water temp of the Occoquan was still 78 degrees on the surface.  It probably needs to drop a few degrees to turn the migration on too.

It isn't Gravelly Point, but last weekend I had a ~12" striper attack a bluegill that was on the end of my line at 4 Mile Run by the treatment plant.

I have found stripers in multiple outings in and around pohick, all juvenile residents.  They are becoming more active with a few degree drop in temperature  High and falling tides are prerrable. Gar schools were also present for the past week near the belvoir personel carrier boats.  They were not interested in anything i threw at them this time. In the past the like puglisi flies.

I am still wondering why there isn't any outflow from the dam at the Occoquan.  I am worried that the lack of flow may mess up the fishing.

I've read they're catching our little pinstriped friends in the mouth of the Occoquan with gusto so it probably won't take long for them to move to the back of the river once a steady waterflow begins.  Maybe someone has a contact with the FCWA that might know a bit more about release schedules.

Judging by the lack of catches in the other usual locations, I wouldn't worry just yet.  For now, head out to the mouth and grab a few next to the ravenous LMs in the north side grass beds.

I mentioned the other day pohick is holding them along the north belvoir side.

Please be cautious when fishing Pohick.  It tends to be a place where guys will open up their bass boats and rip out of the bay.

Grizzly received a call that one of our customers drowned in Pohick yesterday.  No one is sure why he was swimming back to shore away from his kayak.  No one knows why he was even out of it, but they’re still undergoing an investigation.

Be VERY AWARE of your surroundings and be careful, and wear your PFD if you’re out there.

I am guessing that this rain will blow out the river for this weekend.  I was thinking about chasing some stripers at Gravelly Point on Sunday too.  I wonder if it will be poor conditions.
