My experience in teaching youngsters to catch bluegills (my two daughters) is that it is a lot simpler to use the fly rod... kids find it easy to tangle spinning rods and bobbers, you need to worry about bait, use bigger hooks.... I struggled for a couple of seasons, then one day I rigged up a fly rod and left the spinning rods in the car. I started by casting the rod and teaching them how to strip a small fly like a woolly worm- they caught bluegills and it was a lot less work and stress for me. If you can find some bluegills in shallow water near shore, you can just teach him to dangle the fly, no casting or anything like that.
It’s a blast, have fun!
