Spring Trout Trip Suggestions?

I want to plan a long weekend trout fishing trip for sometime around May this spring. I'm thinking of heading up to PA and try some of the famous streams that I hear all about but have yet to try. I've narrowed it down to three options:

Central PA (Penns Cr. Little Juniata)

Pine Creek Watershed (Slate, Cedar Run)

Lehigh River

Any thoughts, or experiences? Also, any recommendations on  lodging/campgrounds, and fly shops in the area?

I can vouch for Penns Creek.  My uncle has a cabin up there and I go every year.  Incredible hatches throughout the spring.  It's famous for its green drake hatch in early June, but that's some challenging fishing as it's mostly at night. 

If you're interested, reach out to a guy by the name of Bruce Fisher at http://www.pennscreekangler.com/.  He can set you up with a cabin and guide if you want it.  He knows every pool in the creek and can tell you what's hatching when.  You have to have the right fly at the right time or you'll get really frustrated.

I will be on Penn most weekends in May. Im workin in Pitt. Feel free to shoot me a text or email. I fished Penn a lot last year. Sulfer hatch is in May. There is a fly shop but i forget the name. Ill re write to this email when I think of it. I always welcome the company. As for a motel or somethin im still researchin.

I went to school at Lafayette, so the Lehigh was nearby. I imagine you are talking about quite a bit higher up on the Lehigh (I was near where it dumped into the Delaware), but the section I went to wasn't particularly well known for trout - that I know of, anyway. I fished it a few times, but only targeted smallmouth. I didn't know about the Shad run up there while I was still at the school. Any time I wanted to go for trout, I typically hit the Bushkill which bordered my campus.

The sulphur hatch on the Little J in May can be a lot of fun. It is susceptible to getting blown out by rain storms so be sure to check the levels (TCO fly shop usually posts 'em).

Little J is great. Lots of other options nearby including Spring Creek...  Penns Creek during the green drake hatch is probably the one you should hit though at least once...

Jeff:  Old stoming grounds. I  used to live on 18th St in Wilson Boro - Bushkill C&R stretch was my "home water" and I'd scout it often while walking the dog. So how did you miss the Shad Fest in Easton? Fishing in PA is the one thing I regret about my relo to Montgomery County 14 years ago.

Good question. I didn't spend too much time fishing there in general. I ran track, so being a year-round division 1 program, it consumed quite a bit of my time. Spring was also our prime season with 5 days of practice after classes and a track meet on the weekend (sometimes lasting both days). Most of the time I did get on the water was spent doing what I (sort of) knew, which was going after trout. The river scene was new to me, as on Cape Cod where I grew up, there really weren't rivers that held trout, except for maybe two that had native brookies, and a few saltwater rivers that had your occasional sea-run brown trout (never got one). I already had my hands full with the switch to a river from oceans and ponds. By the time my senior year rolled around and injuries put a stop to my track career, let's just say I was focusing on making up for lost time on other college "related" activities.

I hear you.  Post-college, many years ago, I traveled with a classmate across the US into the Canadian Rockies, down the Pacific Coast eventually hitchhiking home to NJ from Boulder, CO.  Traipsed and backpacked through a lot of very fishable scenery, but I didn't get the jones for fly fishing until after I was married. ;-)  In any case, no regrets.
