After the thread on wet wading in the Duck Pond and at Gravelly, this sentence from the Arlington County web page struck me:

Also, bacteria levels in Four Mile Run, like most urban streams, routinely exceed water quality standards considered safe for primary contact recreation (swimming).

Cheers,

I used to work for DDOE (district department of the environment) water quality division - "primary contact recreation" considers that the individuals will be possibly or likely permitting water via the oral route of exposure (i.e. going under water).  Water quality of nearly all of the streams and both major rivers (potomac - anacostia) are extremely poor, and levels of fecal coliform varies from "not meeting the WQ standard" to basically a "septic line posing as a stream/river".  Interestingly, some of the highest coliform levels are in streams that actually "look" closest to a normal stream - like Battery Kemble, Rock Creek, Hickey Run, etc. simply due to combined sewer overflow and old infrastructure.  So you can't tell just by looking.

That said, I've been wading in those areas and don't worry too much about it because I can't stand being drenched in sweat inside a pair of waders when it's 97F.  TB

I understand the risk of entering these waters without waders, but I've often wondered about using the common practice of wetting knots in the mouth in these areas. I assume that should be a major concern?
