Shad Timing

Hi TPFR!

I saw the video about this group at the Fly Fishing Film Tour this year in New York City and am really excited to plan a trip to DC to target the Shad run.  I grew up and learned how to fish on the Potomac River but never caught or even knew much about Shad.  I am hoping to come back home and catch shad during their now famous run.  Also hoping to connect more with this awesome group you have here.

My question is about the timing of my trip.  Unfortunately I do not have a job that I can just up and leave to chase shad without notice once the reports start heating.  I am hoping to request some time off in April and want to choose a time to maximize the chance that I will encounter The Run.

If you had to guess, what week in April do you think I should target?

Also, any other information (likely links to prior posts) on tackle basics, flies, and locations would be AWESOME, but I'll also be doing my fair share of research on this awesome group.

Any week in mid-April would be fine for lots of Hickory Shad.  Just keep and eye on the water levels.  As long as the River holds and doesn't get blown out by heavy rain events, the middle of April should be excellent.  Animal can add a few more details.

I agree with your assessment and would add that he run may last longer than normal due to the cold start.
