I used a <$100 conversion kit on a Matthews bow. Stood up in a kayak and floated a river, trying to shoot carp. Let me tell you, it ain't that easy to stand in a kayak and shoot a moving carp with an arrow (read: success rate = 0). From the shore for NSH that are just hanging out, that I could probably do.

I can understand bowfishing for snakeheads in that they're pretty tasty if you can see past the potential health risks of eating fish out of parts of the Potomac.  But for those that bowfish, what do you do with a carp after you shoot it?

How easy is it to bow fish with compound?  I was thinking about etiher usin my 65lb draw Mathews that I shoot for deer or trying to find a cheap re-curve.  Any thoughts are helpful.

Damn 65 pound pull is pretty meaty ;).  I have an old browning (Beth's father's old bow before he bought some fancy Holt, or Boyt, or whatever) set to only 55 pounds.  I like to target shoot, but I haven't installed and adjusted the pin sight since moving here.  And I've never hunted with it....or anything else actually.

Beth has a really nice bow for hunting and another more crappy one rigged for bowfishing.  She always says she wants to bring it here to try carp/snakehead. Actually she was just saying this a few days ago strangely enough -- we just figured there wouldn't be too many bowfishers on the fly forum.  She's done it from a bass boat on the Mississippi years ago and really said it's a lot of fun.  Plus, she and her father were able to find a guy who loved to pickle/eat carp, so they'd bring their catch to him afterward.

Is there anyone here who knows a good place to bowfish?  I actually really enjoy archery, but I haven't done anywhere near enough of it.  Honestly, I'd probably try it but it's one of those things that I'm too intimidated to just "test out" without someone who has more experience with it.

Pohick Bay has a lot of bowfishers, also some spear fisherman. They tend to be on jon boats with trolling motors.

I've seen them have good success with carp, and some success with snakehead.

Something about shooting a 20 lb carp, then hitting it with a bat repeatedly, then throwing it back in the water doesn't seem very sporting.

I started bowfishing last summer, cheap recurve,  PSE Kingfisher, took a few shots at small (12-15" snakehead and only left him a white scar) I had shot about half dozen gar though, catch and release believe it or not. The bow ended up breaking sometime in July- DONT LEAVEM STRUNG IN THE CAR ALL DAY! lol. We bowfished during the day which is not as good as night. I now have an Oneida bow which is like 1/2 recurve and 1/2 compound and I got a stand for my boat with 2x 50w led floodlights. I intend to go hard this season! haha. Very fun though! I intend to eat all the snakeheads, and any dead gar/carp as fertilizer for gardens (not intending to get more then 3 in one night like how some people get a garbage bin full)  Spots to try are pretty much at night any place with spatterdock and hydrilla. they like to sit on top and rest there. At night they are less skittish

I agree with you on this, but only because of the "throw back in the water" part.  I'd personally want to have a use for them after killing them, but I certainly don't care what other people choose to do so long as it's legal.

The recurve or long bow (actually, long bow probably isn't mechanically suited for it) sounds like a blast.  According to Beth, the big ones can really pull your boat around while you try to crank 'em in.

Danny: Never shot a recurve, so I'm no help there.

Steve: I don't know, I never got that far. Had I been in a jon boat, or canoe, or something, I may have hit something. I used a WS Tarpon 120 so standing in it is a lot lot standing on those balance boards with the half ball thing under them. It is passable for fishing, though sometimes I would sit down to tie a knot. That was the main reason I traded that boat out for a (slightly) more stable platform.

It tops at 70. Haha. Deff keeps me in the gym just so I can shoot. But deer at 40 yards are still targets. The rocks under chainbridge look good. I've seen dozen on NSH and met a few bow fishers there.

Not a bow fisherman at all but as a bow hunter I can tell you there is no need to go above 55 pounds. I have killed many deer turkey and even bear out to 60 yards with a 55lb. The only time you might need more is in Africa hunting much larger game. Even still it's like anything else it's all about practice patience and shot placement. Don't give yourself a hernia trying to pull back a bow heavier than you are capable of shooting multiple times without wearing yourself out.

Kicking back this old thread - anyone know if its legal to bowfish in DC?  I saw I guy up at chainbridge last year, but I've seen lots of stuff at chainbridge that probably isn't legal.

To quote Park Police officer Nick "use of rod and reel only" so it is illegal. Please call it in if you see it.
