A couple of notes for the next beer tie -- Monday, July 16th, 7 to 9 pm:

-The beginner's table will be teaching Bi-visibles, an old-school dry fly that works for a lot of species in warm and cold water. The point of this will to teach the proper selection, preparation, and winding of hackles for dry flies, a skill with lots of applications in fly-tying. I'll be running the beginner's table.

-Also at this Beer Tie, we will be holding our first IRON VISE. This is a contest modeled on the Iron Chef television series: we'll have a Secret Ingredient, namely some unusual material available for tying (Dan's beard hair has already been suggested, thanks). Folks who want to play will incorporate the Secret Ingredient into a fly, which they will submit to the panel of judges. Towards the end of the evening the judges will pick some winners based on a) artistic merit, b) fishability. A third category will be c) the first person to catch a fish on their IRON VISE fly, to be decided by posting a photo of fish and fly to the group. You can use whatever materials you want in your fly, in addition to the Secret Ingredient, but the judges will look more favorably on flies that build on the Secret Ingredient, rather than trying to minimize or mask it. Winners will win an as-yet undetermined prize, mostly bragging rights but probably also what's left of the Secret Ingredient.

See you Monday.

I'm new to this list, so pardon my ignorance, but where's the beer tie held? Thanks.

Iron Vise - that's brilliant.  I may have to travel to Clarendon for this.  ;-)

I was planning on getting to this beer tie which will be my first one (and first time tying). My daughter is interested in tying flies as well and I wondering if this is a semi-kid friendly event?

I heard it was kid friendly and I was thinking about attending for the first time and bringing my daughter (10 years old).  Hopefully I'll see you there.  I just need to deconflict the calendar with the wife's calendar.

BEER TIES are totally kid friendly!  Both VA and Paulie attended the last one as a matter of fact.  Looking forward to seeing you all there!

I have a friend who raises/grows Alpacas. He has given me some of their fur to tie with. If anyone wants to experiment with this material and tie him some flies, let me know.

He'd really appreciate if we can come up with something interesting. I'm thinking dubbing for caddis.

I wanted to thank Dan, Miles and everyone else who helped put on the beer tie last night. That was my first time tying anything and it was nice to finally start my new hobby. Also, my daughter (Maggie) came with me and had a blast. I couldn't get her away from the beginners table so we ended up putting our own vise on the end of the table so she could keep at it.

Miles, thanks for your patience there. I think she had you putting in some overtime by getting the clouser minnow lesson at the end but I assure you that will get plenty of use and she will probably tie a million more.

...and not to mention the raffle where we took home a vise, flask(which will be faithfully kept in my breast pocket to help deflect bullets), and letting Maggie help judge the iron vise contest, and all the extra flies she ended up with. We are camping on the Shenendoah this weekend and getting her new fly rod out for the first time so now we have plenty of ammo!

Toward the end of the night Maggie was talking with Heather, who gave her some colorful tying materials to mess with. She whipped out some kind of clouser inspired fly (see attached photo) that was something right out of crazy town. The fly was reminding me of something but I just couldn't quite put my finger on it.....then I knew (see second attached pic)...Rocken Rollen!

Hey Joe,

Your daughter was adorable, so it was fun helping her out. Good luck on the river this weekend. I think you should definitely fish the Rockin Rollen -- it looks like it will be killer. When she gets it perfected, post the recipe so we can tie our own.
