Hi All,

My girlfriend wants to take me somewhere 'romantic' for my birthday and asked where I'd like to go. I've heard about places south of us in VA which are like cottages on stocked private streams or what not? Alternatively, perhaps a suggestion for a good weekend trip in the next month? Any ideas would be helpful and appreciated!

Thanks,
Lane

Lane,

Not sure what the price range is, but the Greenbrier (WV - about 4 hrs) and the Homestead (VA - about 3 hours) both have private water (I believe), plus are close to other popular rivers. But both are also pretty pricey. Really, there are tons of Bed & Breakfasts just about anywhere out towards the west of the state near plenty of the big name rivers.

You have tons of options for a weekend trip. There's several famous rivers near Deep Creek Lake (Yough, Casselman, Savage). There's basically anything in the Blue Ridge mountains of VA. Another option for next month (depending on timing) would be fishing up at the Susquehanna Flats for stripers, but you'd probably need a boat of some sort.

Rose River Farm. http://www.roseriverfarm.com/

Douglas Dear runs and awesome operation and gives a lot back to the community. His luxury cabins are spectacular and his private water on the Rose River is full of fish. You are also within a short distance of some great trout fishing in the Shenandoahs - Robison and the Rapidan are close by, not to mention the public part of the Rose. You are also right in the middle of winery country, if that is your thing.

If his cabins are too pricey, there is always the Old Rag Cottage - http://www.oldragcottage.com/. Far more basic/rustic, but nice and only $85/night. I've stayed in both and can recommend both.

The Homestead has private water. It is catch and release only and I suspect that beyond just stocking it they are actively putting food in there. I have never seen so many fish in such a small amount of water. It's a little trickle of a stream in dense forest, maybe three to five feet wide with pools every thirty feet or so, and each pool has at least three hundred trout in it. I'm exaggerating, but it did remind me of the story about the Hudson before Europeans showed up, that you could walk across it on the backs of the sturgeons. There is no need for waders, and you would do best with a very short, light rod. I was fishing Tenkara there and ironically it was almost impossible to get a good cast because of all the low branches. Even doing slingshot casts, which I consider cheating, I would hit trees on the wrong side of the pool. You're probably not doing Tenkara but if you are bring your shortest line. Fun and challenging fishing. Also the Homestead is a really nice place, great for a weekend getaway.

Homestead waters are good. But if your trip is more about the resort and fishing is just the icing on the cake (I've found this to be true when my own agrees to something like this), Primland is where it is at. My first job out of college, we used to get taken down there by a paving company for three days of pheasant hunting. Primland knocks the socks off the Homestead and the Greenbrier. FWIW, it is apparently a favorite spot of Perk Perkins.

Just throwing out a low-cost option -- Depends on how little you are trying to spend and how much civilized comfort your lady is willing to part with, my girlfriend and I occasionally stay at this place when we are up in Shenandoah and don't want to backcountry camp.  The cabins are... austere... but 50 bucks a night, heated, and have beds and camp mattresses.  From there you can daytrip to various hikes, drive skyline drive, and of course blueline the tiny brook trout streams or fish bigger rivers for smallmouth.

I just booked a weekend at Harman's Cottages in West Virginia near Seneca Rocks for June as I was looking for a similar option to take my wife who doesnt fish. The cabins look really nice and come with a hot tub, grill and fire pit and the area around there has plenty of things to do and see. Best part is that the cabins are directly in front of a stream that is stocked full of large trout...  While I would much rather fish for wild fish, the convenience of being able to fish early and late while the wife relaxes in the cabin or tries her hand at fishing seem worth the tradeoff.  There are also good alternatives for wild fish and smallmouth nearby...

You may also want to check out the Northfork Mountain Inn, where we stayed a couple of years ago in the same area.

Here's another one for you -- I stayed here for a weekend two summers ago with the lady friend.  It's a riverfront cottage just north of Luray on the South Fork.  If the water temps come up and the smallies are biting when you're looking to go, it might be worth a look.

Thank you very very much for all the input!  The more options the better. She's not exactly a girly girl, but definitely not the 'roughing it' type (i.e. no camping). 'Austere' might be workable though!

There are some bed and breakfast's up in Boiling Springs, PA and the
Allenberry "Resort" which includes a theater show. I can't claim any
knowledge of the lodging up there, but the fishing on the Yellow
Breeches is good year round.
