If anyone is interested in some local DC fishing, I will be out at either the Tidal Basin or the C& O canal near Fletchers boat house tommorrow morning for some fly fishing / practice with day flies and nymphs.  If anyone would like to join me, you are more than welcome (expecially if your new to the area or newish to flyfishing.   I have not been at this that long but I will be happy to help if I can).   Hoping to go for carp if they are done spawning but will be happy to get some SMB and bluegills.  I plan on walking down the canal or around the basin Let me know if your interested.

I'll take you up on that offer.  Anything to try and get that monkey off my back of getting skunked a few weeks back.  I'll probably bring one if not both of my daughters with me.  What time were you considering?

      I'm thinking nothing crazy. I will probably get there around 7 or 8AM.  Come when your ready and when you can get the kids up. :)  Do you have a preference between tidal basin or c & o canal?  I'm leaning towards the c&o considering that I recently tied some mulberry flies for carp and I hear ther are mulberry trees at the canal but I am open to suggestions.

I have not fished the C&O canal yet so I'm open to that.  I don't have anything that looks like mulberries but I haven't tried the poppers I bought a few months ago.  From what I've read lately, I think I may be able to tempt some bluegill and other fish with those.  Where do you usually park when fishing C&O?  Just so you know what to look out for, I'll probably be driving a Black Honda Element.  I haven't asked the kids yet so we will see on the time.  I don't mind being early since it just might be comfortable temperature wise in the morning, not that its been that way this week.

C & O it is!   Poppers work.  I can give you a couple mulberry flies if they work.  I will be a Saturn Vue Bright RED that is wrapped with tools all over it and has the name hilti on it.  cant miss it.  Park over at Fletchers boat house at either the front or back parking.  You can find it on GPS or internet.  I will be on the canal. e-mail me at aa...@jorgeinc.com and I can send you my phone number. they say the weather should be really nice.

Aaron and I (with my youngest daughter) met up at around 0730 parking lot.  We never did see whoever replied and said they would be driving the Silver Malibu.  Aaron had a rough start when he pulled out his one and only rod and it's tip was broken off.  He still headed up to the canal ahead of me as I switched out a sinking leader with a floating one.  I also set up my daughter with a spinning rod with a yellow grub and some split shot.  I started with a Yellow Popper and I can't recall what Aaron had.  Small bluegills were all over the banks and they always had an interest in my popper but looked too small to do anything with it.  Eventually one struck hard enough to hook himself on the lower part of the gill.  Not sure if you would call this a foul hook or not.  I eventually added a nymph as a dropper below the popper (about 7-8 inches below and I think it should have been longer) and got even more interest.  Eventually I go another bluegill on the dropper.  My daughter spent most of the time with the spinning reel.  I didn't notice it, but she said she had something that start yanking the pole back and forth and almost pulled her into the canal before it tossed the hook.  She had no way of knowing what it was.  I know that Aaron had at least two small fish (I assume bluegills) but I let him say what he used to catch them.  It was nice sunny morning and it started to warm up around 1000.  That was about the time Aaron gave up on the broken rod and I decided to get my daughter home so she could rest up for a bowling tournament this afternoon.  I would say it was a slow morning but I didn't mind since I can say I didn't get skunked again.

I got a later start than I had planned, but pulled up in time to catch Aaron on his way out. This was my first trip to the canal, and it was a pleasant experience. Couple of bites, nothing stuck. I went again this morning earlier, (around 7am) and it was definitely less crowded. No luck this time either, but again I'm still learning. I saw a couple of good sized 10 inchers swim up to the fly, inspect it, then swim off haha. Hopefully next time they're hungrier. 

Looking forward to heading up there again.

Hey Matt and Jeff,

 

 

      It was nice meeting both of you on Saturday.  I have to say that even though it was not that productive, I still enjoyed the good weather and good company.   I had a nice time with Jeff and his daughter.  I think her favorate part was seeing the pair of deer walk up to the canal around 40 ft from us.  I knew there were deer around but that was a first time for me that they walked up on me like that.  I'm sorry I did not get to spend more time with Matt but I am happy you got out there and that you went back the next morning.  I was originally hoping for carp but the pole issue could not let me get to the other side where the shade and carp were.   I had to cast holding the pole on an angle to stop the line from hitting the pole but that limited my casting to around 20 ft.  I was using a dry fly and prince nymph and ended up catching a single blue gill.  Tried using the mulberry flies I tied at the last beer tie but could not find anyone to take a nibble.  I did not see any mulberry tree near by but I will keep my eyes out for them next time.

      Next time I'm thinking the tidal basin where I've had better luck and there is no other location in the country that you can fish at two national monuments and see another one in the background.  Great for photos   I will give you guys a heads up next time I go.
