I'm planning on bringing my kayak out to Roaches Run this Saturday around 8:00am. It'll be about 48 degrees. Calm winds. High tide's around 9:00am.

Anyone care to join me?

Bryan

I can't do Saturday, but I was considering doing the same thing on Sunday. So if you go, please let me know how you did!

Thanks.

Keep an eye out for prothonotary warblers!  I'll be tracking some black-throated blues and black-throated greens this afternoon.

That's a great spot for 'em.

Caught a couple of crappie under the trees on the far side. Paddled around the whole pond with little other success. But don't let that dissuade you. I'm new at this. I was just happy that I could cast and not turtle the yak, which, BTW is very comfortable, stable and tracks well. On the way back in I saw a gar 5ft off the port side and a foot deep. I circled around to get him but no luck.
I would love to go back with somebody who knows what they're doing.

Bryan

The gar should start stacking up in the in and out flow by the tunnel at Roaches. I can teach a simple gar Clouser at the beer tie if you want.

Rob - that would be great.  I've never gotten ANY interest from the gar in there.  I think I've always been there when they are spawning.  How is the gar clouser different from a "standard" clouser?

Paul, it's made with material that gets caught in their teeth. There is a hook too in case something else eats it- rope flies don't have that.

Ahhhh, that makes sense.  Is there a time of year when they are actually feeding?

I met a guy at Roaches Run a year or so ago who said he used to tie a cotton ball to a hook and fish with that - anything white he said would work.  Do the gar take things on the surface like that too?

Paul I've found they feed after the spawn. Late may through June. Trent and I got into some last year on the occoquan filming for urban lines

Rob, where on the Occoquan did you get into them?  That sounds like fun.
