I haven't been actively fly fishing for 4-5 years now, but would like to start getting a line in the water more often. I have finally convinced my significant other that it might be a fun activity to do together. The problem is, I am pretty rusty on technique and she is completely new to the game, so I think it might be best to jump start ourselves with a little excursion/guided trip that will get us on fish and get her really excited to keep going. I don't necessarily want to commit to a whole weekend getaway, so it would be nice if it was within driving distance of D.C.

Does anyone have any good recommendations for this type of thing?

Orvis actually has a free fly fishing 101 and 201 class. That's actually what I had my girlfriend do to get her started. It isn't completely on-the-water (only 201 is on the water), but I highly recommend it. If you prefer right on the water immediately, look up Rob Snowhite. He's a full-time fly fishing guide in the DC area (and very active on the boards here). He's great both from a guiding perspective and from an education perspective. I have been fly fishing for about 15 years and still picked up plenty of pointers from him when we went out.

Orvis also teamed up with the Unicorn Winery in Amissville VA (out by Warrenton) They cover all the same material in Flyfishing 101 and 201  but with more depth.  Lunch is provided as is some wine tasting.  The winery has a pond with lots of pan fish and some pretty aggressive bass.

If you want your lesson on the Gunpowder for trout, give Micah Danmeyer at Knee Deep Flyfishing a call. He is great at instruction and puts together a great trip.

Another suggestion, while not being in DC but down in Lexington, is John Roberts. My first introduction to fly fishing was with him. Spent an entire day and went from pond casting to being on a stream hooking rainbows and browns. Great teacher and I became pretty decent with my cast (which degraded promptly when I left the country for a year and couldnt practice). Worth the drive. www.vatrout.com.

Ive also spent time with Rob. Learned a lot about what is available locally.

Dusty Wismuth at the Whitetail Ski Resort does a comprehensive two day
school that covers all aspects of the sport. Dusty is a great
instructor, a current/former? Joan Wolf instructor, and a generally nice
person. He is located a hour and half from DC, south of Mercersburg,
PA. The web address is skiwhitetail.com

You might check out the helpful folks at Fletcher's Boathouse; you don't even need to leave the District.
