Hey, if you guys were looking to hook up with some of these characters where would you go around here?  I've got a handle on where to go for smallmouth, but I love bluegill fishing and figured I'd throw this out there in case someone doesn't mind sharing a hot spot with me ;).

Oh, so far I've really only found:

1.  CO Canal at a few different spots
2.  Little Hunting Creek in pools

Tidal Basin?  Upper Potomac?  Ponds?  Lakes?

Thanks folks!

I've enjoyed fishing at Widewater on C&O just up from Old Angler's Inn - but that was before repairs began on washed out portion of the canal last couple of years.  Problem with fishing from towpath is you have to watch your backcast for bikers, hikers and walkers, and I usually go around that by going very early or very late in the day.

Today from about 1 to 3 I fished Widewater just up from Old Angler's Inn.  The very first part of the water, right next to the fence blocking the bike path, where the water is dammed up has a ton of structure.  Rocks,  submerged logs, etc. Using a dry-dropper rig, I was getting hits on nearly every cast.  Pretty good sight-fishing when the sun was out.  Lost count of the tiny ones I caught, landed 2 "big-for-a-bluegill" fish.  The biggest red breasted one jumped and crushed the dry right as it landed.  Who says warm water fishing for panfish can't be fun? Made me wish I had a 3wt.
I was using a hopper as my dry and tied on a tiny black and gold beadhead nymph about 6 inches below.  Cast and strip and pop.  They love little trout flies.

Thanks guys!  I know exactly where you're fishing -- I was there a couple of weeks ago super early near the billy goat trail A.  I found though that you have to backcast up against the "raised" C and O trail where people jog/walk.  Any tips for this?  Are you guys actually getting into the canal?  Should I go over to the other side by the more wooded trail?

Thanks again -- this forum is awesome.  ;)

I've tubed Widewater before, a kayak or canoe would also work well. Good bass and crappie out by the rock islands and cliffs. I've seen some huge bass in the canal immediately below Widewater but have yet to catch any of them. There are schools of shad in the lake, so the usual gray/white clousers, white zonkers, etc work well. I also used the electric frog to great success just off the rocks.

For bluegill I also will use a stimulator/dropper rig sometimes. I always think it's a more western rig and my little secret but now somebody else spilled the beans. =) You used to be able to buy stimulators from Kaufman's with a mono loop under the tail to attach a dropper with a loop-to-loop connector. If you are doing some tying, it would make sense to whip up some stimmies or hoppers like this. I've tried a popper with a dropper and it messed up the popper action too much, but it also sounds like a flyfishing purity test...

Also try the top of Widewater where the waterfall from the lock dumps into it.

Before the canal blowout, I used to have my best results at the bottom end of Widewater, where there was a little current starting to as Widewater would neck down to the much narrower canal.  Also the flow at the outlets of the locks can give up some good fishing - and yes a 3 or 4 wt is just about right.  There's also so good sized C&O bonefish to be found, but they are very skittish.   Once they're finished with the repairs, I think the fishing will improve.   There's an update here http://1.usa.gov/QwTQQ3 (scroll down)

I have fished in canal between Great Falls and Old Angler’s Inn – countless bluegills.  Last Friday, I found hidden trail  off from CO Canal trail and found a heaven place. I gave a trying and caught nice size 14-15” LMB! It made my day!

Nice! I’ve been fishing that hole for years and was one of my first posts on this group. I think I titled it “Pond of Giants”. The LMB are fun to catch, but that pond holds some monster cats and carp. Keep it at….
