Anyone willing to share any knowledge about any of the Ohio tributaries for steelhead next weekend?  Read through Rob Snowhite's blog entry (very interesting read) on the subject and have been through the ODNR site...so I have the basics.  Just curious if anyone has any good tips or recommendations!  Thanks!

I've never fished in Ohio, but if you're near the PA border, I've had nothing but success on Elk Creek near Erie. You can get good acces at folly's end campground, which has a badass little fly shop where I've been able to pick up anything ever needed on te stream, from flies to waders... There's nothing quite as nice as knowing that you can get more flies within 100 feet of the stream... Particularly when you are on unfamiliar water so far from home

I second the Elk Creek recommendation.

Check out Conneut Creek, Grand and Chagrin as well.  Way less crowded than Elk, and in my opinion just as good.  I think you could get a quality experience there.  You may also want to check out dfishinfool.com ( I think that is how its spelled). He runs a great guide service and has a ton of real-time information on what is fishing well.  Good luck!

Vince,

I grew up in OH. I second Gaucho Fly. Conneut Creek, Grand and Chagrin are can be great. Check water flows before going. Mad River Outfitters is a great resource and provides guide services.

I've only fished the Chagrin since it's 15 minutes from my parents house in Chardon, OH.  My dad was just out on the Chagrin yesterday and he caught one and hooked up with a few more.  Around noon, he headed to Conneut but had no luck.  I know the tributaries can change daily, if not hourly, so take this with a grain of salt... but he said the flow on Chagrin was great.  I'll be wetting the line when I'm up there for Thanksgiving, as well.

I was actually up on Twentymile in PA last weekend with my girlfriend, dad, and his girlfriend, and I ran into a fellow TPFRer (his logo cap tipped me off).  If you're reading, raise your hand!  Small world... So during our 3-day trip to the PA tribs, we each hooked up with enough fish to maintain our interest, but we (and no one else) was crushing them.  It's still great to get out there, regardless of the result.  If I succeeded, you'll see a few pictures from that trip attached below.  If I failed, use your imagination :)  Best of luck in OH!

Mike, I am raising my hand.  I was the guy you ran into on Twentymile with the TPFR hat.  I really enjoyed meeting you, your girlfriend and her parents.  I especially enjoyed discussing with your girlfriend's father the differences between the Ohio vs PA strains of migratory rainbows between his frequent catches of steelhd.  He is a very good fisherman and nice guy.  It also turns out we fish the same waters out west.

As it turned out we ended up having a banner trip after the rains came.  Once the water rose and put a little color in the water the steelhd started to move out the the few holes they were stacked up in with 16 fishermen in each hole harassing them.  I believe also that there were some fresh fish that moved in because some of the fish were chrome bright.  All 8 of us in my group had multiple hook ups each day including my one of my sons who was on his first steelhead trip (unfortunately he was not able to land any of them).

Again, it was fun meeting up with you guys and hopefully we will meet again streamside.

Tom

Thanks everyone! Been watching the forums and water flows...looks like it is low right now and fish are sparse, but hoping for some rain this week. Appreciate all of the thoughts on here! Will definitely focus on Conneut Creek, Grand and Chagrin!

Hey Vince (and anyone else for that matter)... any luck on the OH tribs over Thanksgiving?  I was able to get out on the water Sunday morning.  I fished the Gates Mills area of the Chagrin River for a few hours and hooked up with only one fish.  Other than that, didn't have a take.  I was hoping to spend more time on the water, but family obligations blah blah blah...

I was in Chagrin Falls on Saturday, so I swung by Chagrin River Outfitters to get some info.  In a nutshell, water levels were pretty low all around and everyone had to work pretty hard to find any fish.  I'm curious to hear if anyone else got out over the holiday and how they fared.  I'm already counting down the days 'til my next trip up north.
