Anyone interested in fishing sunset today?  Was out at White Oak Run in Shenandoah this weekend and brought the fly rod, got skunked. Naturally all I've been able to think about today is hooking into some fish...

Haha yea!  I have a 9' 5wt and the thing is like swinging a telephone pole in those tiny pools...

I recently got skunked at While Oak as well, saw plenty of small brookies but stealth is tough given the skinny water.  Also, I need to get a more "Shenandoah-appropriate" rod...my 9', 6-weight is complete overkill.

Until you get another rod, try just fishing top half or three pieces of your rod, strip off the line you need from your reel and put the reel in your pocket.

Also a good way to practice your double haul, using just the top half of the rod.

I always wondered why there were no outfits that came with extra pieces to convert a rod into a "shorty".  For instance, if you had a 4-piece 9' rod, you could switch out the middle two pieces for a single piece with a more aggressive taper, turning it into a 6'6" rod.  It would mess up the flex a bit, but you aren't really using rod bend in those tiny stream casts.

Dan, if Orvis starts making this I want a cut!

TFO does offer some conversion kits for a few of their rods.  On the BVK series they have a conversion kit to take the 8' 3wt to a 10' 3 wt. On the TICR x rods you can turn the standard 9' 7 or 8 wt single handed rod into a 11'3" two handed rod.  I would be interested to hear from someone who has either of these to know how they perform.

I went out to the Rapidan this past Sunday on a guided trip. Weapon of choice with this guide for a "newbie" is a 8' or 8'6 4wt (that way if they aren't good at casting, the length can help get the fly in position), but for the more experienced casters, a 7 or 7'6 2 or 3wt. Apparently most of the brook trout streams are extremely low right now, so hopefully they got some rain out of these storms that moved through. I still managed to get double digits of 4-6" fish and 4 8-9" brookies. Beautiful fish.

If you dont want to divulge where on the Rap you were, but if you wouldnt mind me asking where on the river you were?  I've fished that river for a decade and almost always fish from the first bridge all the way up to the Camp.  6' 1wt is what i carry on brook streams.  i got a deal on it when they first came out and its been my most favorite purchase ever.

I have no problem divulging, I'm just not 100% sure! I believe we started at the first(?) bridge and went upstream, but realized after a few pools that we were fishing behind someone (the pools were fishing "weird" according to my guide, then we found wet footprints on some rocks), so we jumped up to the next (second?) bridge and went upstream from there.

Alright.  Above the 2nd bridge and till you re-enter the SNP is my favorite brookie section in the park.  Only thing that might beat it is a section on the upper hughes.  But that spot requires a very rigorious hour hike down.  I cant wait till Thanksgiving weekend to get up there.  Anymore i have most of the pools memorized. haha.  had a few to many lonesome weekends in high school so id just spend 12-14 hrs up there casting and looking around.
