Recently I've been thinking about getting an SUP, and using it for fishing. In case you don't know an SUP is basically an oversized surf board that you stand up on and use a long paddle for movement. There were first used by surfers, now they are gaining popularity in flat water, and rivers.  Some are even designed for fishing with more stability and ability to cary gear. The quiet approach and high point of view seems like it would be perfect for stalking fish like carp, or bass in shallow water. Of course I would not try to fish off of an SUP until I get comfortable enough. Anyone have any experience with them?  What are your thoughts? Is this a crazy idea?

I have only used stand up paddle boards for surfing, so I can't say for certain how they transfer to fishing. Some of the bigger paddle boards are really sturdy and, in my opinion, could be definitely be used for fishing. It might get a little awkward maintaining your center of balance casting, but once you got the hang of it, I think I would be a fun away to approach fish. Who knows, maybe you could even work up to some bigger fish...

I have thought about the SUP route myself, this video shows a girl doing a double haul on one and makes it look easy.

Its an awesome board. Very stable and the perfect fly fishing
platform. I highly recommend an SUP for fly fishing.

Hi Matt, Most of my SUP fishing is done around Pohick Bay / Gunston
Cove as I live in Fairfax. You can take one almost anywhere a kayak
can go. You can rent a SUP at Pohick for $8 / hour if you want to
give it a try. Let me know if you do as I want to meet other SUP
fisherman.

Jacks boathouse in Georgetown also rents them though I don't know the pricing.  I see a ton of non fisherman types  using them.

Matt: Check out Bote boards as well. They make SUPs for fishing. The SUP/Flyfishing concept looks like its catching on. I saw a dude fishing through Fletcher's on Saturday with an SUP. Let us know how it works out if you get one. Derek

I have fished and duck hunted from a SUP. While I had a blast doing both, I would suggest checking out something like the Hobie Mirage or the Native Ultimate line. Both can be paddled standing with ease but allow for a lot more storage. In my crazier college days, I took a 14.5' Ultimate down a class III and surfed a wave with it standing up the first year they came out. They're very capable boats.
