Thats pretty  interesting. I did not realize myself that the salt levels have been raising.  Sounds like there a blast to catch.  Have you or any of your guided groups catch any?

That is pretty awesome I had no idea that they would come up this far north in the Potomac.  Sure wish I wasn't heading out of town this weekend or I would definitely take my kayak out to Pohick and try to chase them.  Hopefully they will stick around for another week till I get a chance to make it out.  Speaking of Pohick bay, has anyone been out on it recently.  My last trip there was about a month ago and the grass was extremely thick, and it made paddling a real struggle.  Especially around the pads and up through the creek, wondering if the grass has thinned out at all since.

That's awesome about the redfish migration. I go down to Louisiana
once a year to fish them out of the Gulf and have attached pics from
the last two years. Imagine if they get that big here.

So I recently moved here, joined the forum on Monday and attended the
beer drinking event late. I went out to Lock 8 on Saturday, flyfished
for the first time and caught a sunfish while wading. I want to sneak
out after work tonite and want to know where I should go. I work
downtown, get out after 5, and want to maximize my time before the sun
sets. Since I realize traffic here makes LA seem calm, does anyone
have any close suggestions? Maybe Chain Bridge? Fletchers?? Any
suggestions would help. Thanks.

Pat,

I also work downtown (21st and L) and if I leave here at around 445 I can be standing on the water with rod in hand at chain bridge by about 530. With sunset being around 730 that gives enough time to get some casts  in. Another TPFR'r who also works downtown has joined me in the past. He and I both bike and have toyed with the idea of biking to work with our gear and than heading down to gravelly point via the mt. vernon trail after work. I've done it before and that takes about 15-20 minutes via bike, not sure if its any faster by car. Anyway we're talking about possibly doing a post work trip next week, I'm traveling Monday and Friday so mid week is best for me, let me know if you're interested.

You all might want to consider the Tidal Basin as well. I've only fished it early in the mornings, so I'm not sure how crowded with tourists it would be after work, but it can be a very productive fishery.

That's right - bank fishing the water that's right in front of the Thomas Jefferson Memorial. Casting is pretty tight in most spots, but there are a few areas where it opens up. Just walk around it casting out where you can. Where it's too tight to cast out, cast along the banks, especially under trees. You'll be surprised at the number of species in there.

Alright. Next time Im able to get out ill try the area.  Would you suggest mid sinking, fast sink or floating line, over the years ive acumilated all of them.  And im guessing mostly stremers and baitfish looking patterns?

Average depth is 10' in the basin. Go with floater. There is hidden structure in there you can snag with a sinkin line.

I think it's pretty uniformly 10' deep, so a floating line would be fine.

I stopped by the flats at Little Hunting (saw lots of bass in shade under bridge busting bait) but no reds. Then I drove up to the flats at Belle Haven. The tide was coming in. I only saw gizzard shad jumping by the bridge at Hunting Creek. Loads of birds to see, from bald eagles to egrets. Lots of Monarch butterflies too. No reds.

I'm willing to throw in a challenge of a free, new in box Polyfuse lime green 8wt line to the first person who can catch and post a photo of themselves with a redfish from our tidal waters in 2012.

I sailed a boat up from Port Tobbacco to the Fort Washington this weekend and since there was some much talk of the salinity levels in the river I decided to take not of the crab fishinging in the river.  There are crab pots all the way up to Fort Washington (across from Mount Vernon) now.  It's the first time I have ever seen them that far up. Crabs could be seen on the sea wall eating worms at fort washington.  There is a ton of baitfish in the river as well.  They all seem to be congrigating on the drop offs along the river.   There where also a ton of striper fisherman out everywhere mostly still fishing but some where trolling as well.   The next trip I plan to take a cast net to see what kind of bait is actually coming in.
