Does anyone have any experience fishing near the Tillghman island on the Chesapeake. Im heading up for the weekend and want to try fly fishing on the bay. Any fly recommendations or pointers on the area would be appreciated.

There is a good amount of current that flows through the area between Tillghman and the mainland.  Sometimes it is over a knot of current or more.  I have cut through there before and made them raise the drawbridge as I went through there to go into the Choptank River.

I would imagine that the current would hold stripers.  I have been told that in the Bay the Stripers like to bite, in the summer, at day break and sunset.  Try different clower patterns on a sink tip or sinking line and you should do something.

Tim,

That's a big area, where are you staying?

Shoreline fishing is limited. If you have a kayak, go down to Bellevue and fish the Tred Avon River. Lots of white perch and the like.

If you have a boat, there are tons of possibilities.....Black Walnut Point always holds fish. Knapps Narrows has a bridge....

Or you can hire Capt. Sean Crawford to show you all the different places from his boat. He is FFF certified.

I will be staying about a block from the tilghman marina.  i plan on renting a kayak since it will only two days. It would take me to long to get one of my boats down there.  There is supposed to be a guide named captain fish at the marina that does fly fishing and I am going to stop in at keepers in st Michaels and see if I can get some local insight and flys.

I stopped in at orvis and picked up a new 8 wt which im excited about trying out. The house im staying at is directly on the bay and has a deep water dock so if im lucky I may be able to pull something in there tonight.

Thanks for all the info. I didn't have much luck on the fly but im sure that was due to my inexperience.   I was able to catch a few croaker and small rocks on standard tackle and learned of some additional places to try next time. All in all I still classify the week end a success.
