Hi there,

I'm developing on OSX and the only version of Sphinx I could get to start using rake ts:start (because they all work if I start them manually using the searchd binary) is the latest one, 2.1.0.

However, I get lots of warnings saying:

Unsupported version: 2.1.0

and when I want to do search, I get this:

Riddle cannot detect Sphinx on your machine, and so can't determine which version of Sphinx you are planning on using.

I'm on Snow Leopard using Rails 3.0.6 and Ruby 1.9.2 and today's versions of thinking_sphinx and riddle.

What's a good version of Sphinx to use on Snow Leopard that's also supported by thinking_sphinx, and where do I get it from?

Thanks!

Ergh, they've updated the version in source to 2.1.0? The Sphinx team seem to have a different idea of what a version is compared to the Ruby community…

I have 2.0.2 sitting in a git repo which compiles and runs on Snow Leopard - try the master branch:

Also, I've now updated Thinking Sphinx and Riddle to support Sphinx 2.1.0 - you'll need to use git repo references for both at this point, though.

Thanks, Pat.

It's a bit strange with 2.0.2 -- I can run searchd manually without
any problems, but if I invoke it using the rake task, it crashes.

I've resigned to starting searchd manually, because eventually it'll
run on a dedicated machine anyway, and I wouldn't want to set up the
whole app on that machine only so I can use rake ts:start.

And in their defense, 2.1.0 is only available from the read-only SVN
repo directly, it's not even listed as a beta yet.

Thanks for the quick action!

On a different note, any hope of implementing real-time indexes in TS?

Hmm, that's a little frustrating - 2.0.2 has been working fine for me locally. Still, good to know you're able to work around it.

As for real-time indices - I'm working through a rewrite of TS (see the edge branch), which will include real-time indices support. SphinxQL is required for that, and it's the switch to that from the older socket queries that prompted the rewrite. It's still a fair way from completion, and there's not actually any real-time indices support in there yet - but the basic functionality works. README has the list of everything that's missing.

But yeah, it's a matter of months, not weeks, to when this is going to be 'complete'.

I apologise in advance but I am a total newbie - I was confused how to
install sphinx and somehow did it using the SVN repo but am
encountering this problem because it is too new. Furthermore, I am not
sure how to install these revised versions of thinking sphinx and
riddle from the git repos. would you be able to provide me with the
right commands to feed in. i'm using lion OS. thanks so much

Hi Sukhjeet

You'll want to have the following lines in your Gemfile:

gem 'riddle',
:git => 'git://github.com/freelancing-god/riddle.git',
:ref => '5bf1cc4f5127e692d0113f06109a97ec1dedb878'
gem 'thinking-sphinx',
:git => 'git://github.com/freelancing-god/thinking-sphinx.git',
:ref => '9c8f395e84bd6e089a6ba1bba039f821c3019e54'

Then run 'bundle update thinking-sphinx', and you should be good to go.

Cheers
