Hi,

I was thinking to provide shared hosting for Rails and I am wondering how I could provide thinking sphinx on a shared host. I think it is not possible since Sphinx does not have any authentication and every application needs its own

I've had some experience with this, as I'm providing hosted Sphinx instances via Flying Sphinx. Firstly, you'll want to make sure every client gets Sphinx on a unique port. And yes, authentication would be ideal - and so I patched Sphinx to provide this, via the searchd setting client_key.

searchd
{
# …
client_key = secret_auth_key_value
}

Both Riddle and Thinking Sphinx allow for the use of this setting too. Check out the flying-sphinx source:
https://github.com/flying-sphinx/flying-sphinx/blob/master/lib/flying_sphinx/railtie.rb#L12

And my fork of Sphinx with the patch applied against various versions (though not 2.0.5 yet) can be found here - see different branches for different versions:

All that said - if you would rather let me handle Sphinx hosting, we could possibly sort something out for your clients to use Flying Sphinx. Perhaps best to discuss that off-list if you're interested. If not, no worries :)
