The AppleTV unit worked fine at Best Buy.

They have 36 months-no interest, so I went ahead and bought a new TV. It arrives Monday.

Prices have come dramatically down. In 2006 I bought a Samsung 40" LCD for $1400 (was $1700 at Best Buy). This time I got a 55" for $749. Crazy.

The solution I had hoped to avoid, but... It's like $20 a month, so no huge deal. Football season should be more fun now, at least.

Thank you, sir.
Unfortunately, on the way to Best Buy to actually buy the TV, my iPhone 3Gs died.  Just up and died, dead as a doornail, whatever that is.

Hilarious thing that's actually not really very funny:  Back in 2010 when I got the phone, I bought the extended warranty for $50 extra, which took the warranty out to two years from purchase.  The warranty expired on June 18.  The phone expired on June 20.

So now I have to cough up another hundred bucks for an iPhone 4.  And I'll still be one model behind the current model.  (Can't really afford $200 for a 4Gs right now, especially with the new TV!)  When the 5 comes out, I'll be a dinosaur again.

This modern high-tech lifestyle is expensive, y'all!

Check around- you might still be able to get a 3GS on contract free. The 4 is a superior handset in just about every way (I stuck with it instead of opting for the 4S). The 5 is rumored to be coming out in September, if there's any way you can hold out til then you might be able to pick up a 4 free with contract. What cell service do you have? I might have a handset I can loan you for a few months.

Thanks, Cary-- I am on digest and didn't see your reply here until just now.

I think it worked out okay, relatively speaking.  I'm out of contract now, so whenever a new iphone comes along, I'm free to get it with a new contract, if I want.

What really bugged me is they're GIVING AWAY FOR FREE 3Gs phones, but they charged me $75 for one even though I had AppleCare for two years and the phone had just died two days after.  They wanted $150 but I worked them down to $75.

I asked the guy, "SInce you're giving away phones that are not even as good as what I had (8 GB, not 16), can't you just give me one of those?  I won't even have a phone as good as what I had before it broke!"  He just looked at me like I was crazy.  "Oh, we can't do that at all!"  Jeez.

Yeah, they very well COULD have done that. I bought a refurb Time Capsule from Apple's website, had issues and brought it to my local store. The manager pulled a new one off the shelf and gave it to me, no questions asked. I've had the same treatment every time I've gone in with a problem or question. If I hadn't, I may not be as deep in the Apple-verse as I am. It's disappointing that another store couldn't do the same for you.
