While reading that article which Cary posted about disappointing
movies, they list Judge Dredd and make the case for the new film,
Dredd, to be a big improvement. (All accounts point to this being the
case at this time.) So this got me thinking: what other genre films
deserve to get remade?

Personally, the top of my list any time I think about this question is
King Kong vs Godzilla. Toho had wanted to make another film pitting
these monsters against each other in 1991 but the negotiations with
the Turner people proved insurmountable. But to imagine the fight
between Kong and Goji with Hesai-era (or beyond!) special effects
truly makes this daikaiju fanboy's eyes go all saucer-like.
Especially considering what had just been done in the way of close
ranged daikaiju combat in Godzilla vs Biollante, itself something of a
revelation.

So what of it folks? What genre films deserve a big budget modern
remake?

All the Star Wars movies. Yes, I said all of them.

I can think of a few, if camp movies are going to be included. Destroy All Monsters (my personal favorite of all the giant city killing monster flicks), Gargoyles (I saw it on channel 30's Creature Feature decades ago and was fascinated by it, but it's a terrible flick now), Death Race 2000 (not the recent crappy adaption), Logan's Run, maybe even a modernized Poltergeist that takes advantage of cutting edge effects.

I believe a Logan's Run remake is in development stage. Or rumor stage.

Poltergeist is a good one, although I must say that Poltergeist is one
of the absolute best PG-13 horror films ever made.

Gargoyles is another good call.

Would you believe that I have never seen Logan's Run?

Bearing in mind it's as old as some of the Geeks it's a fun flick. Some other suggestions- a proper Daredevil movie, a modern rendition of some of my favorite cheesy kung fu flicks like Shaolin Executioner or Five Deadly Venoms, or some horror classics that didn't age well like Hellraiser.

Back to the Future should be released in 2015 (as Part 2 took place in that year).  The 2015 Marty could travel back in time to 1985.  It would be fun!

Dr Jen and i recently rewatched Highlander, the story is fantastic, but the effects didn't hold up worth a damn. I say it's ripe for a fresh 20-teens makeover.

I'm guessing it is a prerequisite that Zac Efron would star.  Or, if he is getting too much of an edge to him, they could always throw the Bieb in there.

The idea of remaking Back To The Future in 2015 is very funny to me.
I imagine that to the kids of the 10's, the 80's would be as alien as
the 50's were to the original audience.

Actually, my 12 year old loves those movies. We watch them at least once every year. And, it is funny for him to ask me questions about the 80's. "What gas really that low back then?" "Who is Max Headroom?" Stuff like that.

Right now I am imagining a "Who the hell is Barack Obama?" joke as a
callback to the original.

Instead of jokes in the 50s about Ronald Reagan the actor being President in the 80s, you'd have jokes in the 80s about Arnold Schwarzenegger being Governor in the future.

Zac Effron is as good as any other kid I suppose to play Marty.  It's bound to be some kid from the Disney Channel either way.  So who would play Doc Brown?

I could see that as a real scenery-chewing role for Nicolas Cage.

Since we all seem to have 1985 on the brain, how about a reboot of Police Academy?

Who would play Mahoney in this day and age?

You'd have to make Police Academy an "All Star" movie, with folks like
Carel, Vince Vaughn (whom I could see as Mahoney), Paul Rudd, Jason
Segel, Will Farrell, Amy Pohler, Tina Fey, Adam Sandler, Sacha Cohen,
etc.

Shut your mouth! No Bueller remakes! That's going too far.

By the way, in the Back to the Future remake Doc Brown should be played by the actor that played Kramer on Seinfeld.

I agree with Ed about the rewatchability of the original BTTF. I think many post-Speilburg/post-Lucas films still hold up.
