Danger, this is about as spoiler-y as you can get. If you've seen Prometheus this sums up pretty well my feeling walking out of the movie.

That is spot on and very funny.  I'll have to watch the whole thing.

Movie was terrible. We DID walk out.  Looked great, but script was a total dumpster fire full of half-considered and poorly-executed ideas.  Easily worse than Avatar (which I kinda liked) and AI (which I hated).
Almost good as garbage, but not really.  Sunshine was better.

Very disappointing, and not because I was comparing it to Alien or anything else. Fails miserably on its own merits.

BTW - BIG SPOILER
.
.
.
.
.
The aliens were created to kill us to punish us for murdering Jesus. Not kidding. The xenomorphs are punishment for our having mishandled Christ.
Check please.

I've been told that spoiler, too. It made me want to punch a baby.

The full review by those guys is pretty spot on and entertaining to boot.

I'm not sure how many of you follow toplessrobot.com but this is a pretty funny rundown:

well the second part.

Uh, I kind of missed that as the reason they wanted to wipe us out.  Not sure where that comes from.  The lady at the end specifically said she wanted to know why, as in, she didn't know.  Whose interpretation was that?

But, over all, yeah, not worth seeing in the theater.  Maybe not even on DVD.

I guess it came from Ridley himself.

My understanding is Ridley's original script made sense but was less exciting. Lindeloff came in and jazzed it up but didn't bother to re-connect the dots so it would make sense. So characters behave like they did before, but now for no apparent reason.

Yeah, I'm confused too. The only thing I can think of is that the aliens were killed about 2000 years ago, but that's the only even remotely Christ connected plot point I can think of. And since the story takes place in the 2090's, that time frame doesn't even fit.

Wow. Are we talking about the same Ridley Scott? The same Ridley Scott infamous for not filming scenes from the script and making up new scenes based on his whims of the days? The same Ridley Scott who is well known for creating his movies in the editing room? Trying to blame Lindeloff (or any screenwriter) for an incoherent Ridley Scott film is like blaming a miner who dug up the iron for a bad car - a lot happened before it got to the final form. Even Scott's most well loved movies feature bizarre plot holes and oddities - dead Lambert's nakedness, the sixth replicant, the 30-seconds-and-done slave revolt. Scott's films have always worked more as explorations of atmosphere and theme than tightly constructed narratives.

Well, you know, what's 90 years when millennia are involved? Time frame works just fine.

This isn't explicitly said in the movie, so there's no reason why you should have "gotten it." You guys can let yourselves off the hook.

It's been interviews afterward that this has been discussed.

Maybe getting lost in all of this is how amazing the trailers were for this movie. Even knowing how bad the film is, I went back and re-watched. I want THAT movie. What a great trailer.  boy!

You know, you're exactly right. I was excitedly anticipating the movie after seeing the trailers, only to have that anticipation fully kicked in the crotch. I guess that's why it irritates me so; there was so much promise there.

Yeah, that second trailer was amazing. The alarm sound wailing as stuff started going bad... Very cool.

Someone on another group pointed out last night that the plot of Prometheus was *exactly* the same as HP Lovecraft's "At the Mountains of Madness."

Not the story I remember, and it wasn't all that long ago that I read it.

Here's what the guy on the other group said about comparing Prometheus to "At the Mountains of Madness"--
--Van

Alien planet = Antarctica

Weyland expedition = Miskatonic Expedition

Engineers  = Star-Headed Old Ones

Alien Mutations/Goo = Shoggoths.

In Lovecraft's novel, the Miskatonic expedition discovers that the star-headed Old Ones created humanity.  The same Old Ones also genetically bred the monstrous Shoggoths.  The Old ones lose control of the Shoggoths. Those Old Ones not killed by the Shoggoths go into suspended animation until being reawakened by the Miskatonic Expedition. The Old Ones attack the humans. The Shoggoths then attack both the humans and the revived Old Ones. The Miskatonic expedition even found beheaded corpses Old Ones (just as the Weyland expedition found a beheaded Engineer).

More theories.

I finally saw it yesterday. Despite its flaws, it was still a beautiful movie to watch on the big screen in digital and I don't regret that. There is no way I could have replicated that experience at home.

Agreed, it was gorgeous to watch. I just wish it had been what the trailers had hinted to. Even if nothing had been taken out from the rumored original script I think I would have disliked it.
