And I figure this is a good place to start asking.

Couple things.

1) I'm doing this entirely digitally.  I'm buying comics through Comixology on my iPad.  So far, its been a nice way to read what I've bought to date.  While I kinda miss not holding a book in my hands, I already don't miss having to bag and board the things and store them.

2) I've picked up Justice League, Saga and started reading Grant Morrison's The Invisibles (not entirely sold on the last one yet. The first two have been enjoyable.).

3) I'm making a conscious decision to skip reading the Walking Dead series for now.  I'd like to watch the show at some point and I'm taking the opposite approach of show first, then book. I may be way off base here, but that's been my thinking.

So!  I seek opinions!  Shopping within Comixology's app is somewhat daunting.  There is something to be said for perusing in a comic book shop, but unfortunately here in God's Waiting Room (Sarasota) I don't have that option.

Are there some titles out there that are 'must reads'?  Any obscure stuff that was cool?

Your consideration is greatly appreciated.

Question: DC/Vertigo, Marvel, Image, independent? What is your preference?

Fables is a great comic.  I've been really enjoying Action Comics and Fantastic Four as well.

Agreed on Fables. Highly recommend.
I would also recommend Invincible by Robert Kirkman. I've been collecting the Ultimate Collection trade paperback and I LOVE that series. It's not your typical superhero comic book.

Invisibles is such a weird title. I've enjoyed it, but it's hard to follow sometimes. I just installed Comixology on my iPad and got the first Scott Pilgrim book. Its a better overall experience than my other comic reader that just uses CBZ or PDF files; the image quality in particular is fantastic.

By the way, Invincible #1 is free on Comixology if you want to try it first. Although, I recommend sticking with it to current.

Yes, Invincible is really good.  I should have mentioned it too.  Thankfully, Ed's got your back.

Really appreciate it guys.  I am all in on Invincible.  I'll take a look at Fables too (I've seen that mentioned here a few times).

Give New Avengers a try and by that I mean go back to the beginning of the Brian Michael Bendis run.  I recently read these (I am up to Civil War at the moment) and have found them to be very enjoyable and fun reads.

Hey Race!  Glad to see you're back into comics!  There is no Excalibur anymore.  Sorry.  ;)

My recommendations:
1) Fables - You've already heard enough about it.  And it's all true.  Great comic.

2) The Unwritten - Another Vertigo book.  Really fantastic series.  It's a story about stories.  Can't recommend it enough.

3) If you want superheroes, "Daredevil" is the possibly the best superhero comic on the market right now.  The current series (on issue #8 or something right now) is written by Mark Waid.  Even if you've never read a Daredevil comic before, this new series is great.   Fun, adventurous, smart, and not too dark and edgy.

4) Another great superhero comic right now is "Flash".  This surprised everyone.  The new series (on issue #6 or #7) has great art, strong storytelling, and is just a darn good read each month.

Thanks again for the suggestions!

I've started reading Fables.  So far, I'm really enjoying it.  I kinda wish Comixology offered a collection/graphic novel option, but so far its worth it, so we'll see.

I'll be checking out the other items listed by Shag and Michael.  Its been fun exploring!
