So, again for a third time, I just finished watching Quantum Leap series. Maybe my memory fails me, like it always does, and the series finale really disappointed me before but this time around the series finale really, really disappointed and depressed me. I sort of remember watching the episode when it first aired way back in 1993 but I don't remember there ever being discussion (mostly because the internet then is not as loud is it is now) of how disappointing the ending was as I have found now today. Just doing a Google search I came upon this interesting blog post:

I would have to say that there have been some really awful and disappointing series finales in the past but to say that Quantum Leap is the worst of them? I would almost have to agree. It was definitely a very unsatisfying ending and am now waiting for a season 6 to fix it, which, of course, will never happen. Unless, they finally make that movie that has been rumored for many years.

I completely disagree.  I loved the last episode to Quantum Leap.  I got into the show at around the end of the second season and after that hardly missed a week in addition to watching the old episodes on USA.  It was my favorite show of the time and it was one of the few times that I had a small group of friends that all watched it and then discussed it the next day at lunch.  The final episode had nods to the entire series going all the way back to the first episode and I liked that they left it open for more leaps because I wasn't ready for it to be over.  The scene where the bartender basically tells Sam that the leaps are going to get harder gets to me every time I see it.  And it gave Al a happy ending though not in the Asian massage parlor way.

So I liked it.  A lot.  Your mileage may vary.

That guy totally gets the facts about Babylon 5 (and Crusade) wrong. Fortunately the commenters corrected him.

I was expecting him to mention Battlestar Galactica, but it may have been written before that series ended.

I loved the endings of B5 and modern Galactica, but I know lots of people hate both.

Patrick is the real expert on this subject, but I believe the series finale was filmed far in advance of the series being canceled.  For example, the series ended at the end of the fifth season. I want to say the series finale was filmed sometime in the fourth or third season because they were worried about being canceled with no notice.  However, I can't find anything online to back that up.

However, this idea is supported by the fact that the series finale doesn't acknowledge any of the dangling subplots from the fifth season (i.e. evil leaper).

Regardless, I liked the ending.  It certainly wasn't a happy ending for Sam (meaning he didn't return home), but it did show that Sam was meant to be a leaper and would continue to help people.  Supporting the idea of destiny.
