So now all his apparitions from the ring are going to be pastels, flowers and fashion wear?
Yes, I went there.
I actually think it is going to be interesting. I picked up #1 of Earth 2 and I plan to stick around for a few more issues to see where Robinson goes with this title and new GL.

I'm disappointed in this decision.  I don't have an issue with gay characters, I just wish it had been someone other than Alan Scott.  In the previous continuity, Alan had this wonderful relationship with his wife Molly.  Also, Alan fathered two children.  Making him now a gay character takes all that away and ensures those relationships will never exist.

Seems to me it might have made more sense for another JSA member to be gay.  Perhaps someone without a strong marriage in their long history.  Certain JSA members have long-term, well-known marriages, such as: Jay & Joan Garrick (Flash), Kent & Inza Nelson (Dr Fate), Alan & Molly Scott (Green Lantern), Ted & Doris Knight (Starman), Carter & Shiera Hall (Hawkman), and Wesley & Dian Dodds (Sandman).

I think it would have made more sense for someone else to be gay, such as: Hourman (Rex Tyler), Al Pratt (The Atom), Ted Grant (Wildcat), Jim Corrigan (Spectre), the new Mister Terrific, or even Charles McNider (Doctor Mid-Nite).  I realize many of those were also married, but their relationships were rarely mentioned in the past 60 years.  Actually, Doctor Mid-Nite would have been a great choice.  He had a history as a real playboy.  That would be a great cover for someone who is gay.

Just my two cents.

Shag,

While I agree with you that Dr. Mid-Nite would have been a good choice, I am alright with it being Alan Scott.  If the first issue of Earth 2 showed us anything, its that this is a very different Earth 2 than we remember from the good old days.  And now DC can say that one of their original, Golden Age characters (one with a name you all recognize, even if you couldn't pick him out of a lineup) is a homosexual.  So that suits their needs at this time.

Making Hawkman gay would have just set eyes a rolling, I think.  Oh, the big burly guy who doesn't wear a shirt and carries round gigantic medieval phal-err, I mean weapons, is gay?  Bestill my beating heart! ;)

Also, regarding Kent and Inza Nelson:

I heard a rumor that they are being brought back but are going to be killed off by a demonic entity.  Then, mercenary Jared Stevens will end up with the Helm of Nabu, and it will be forged into a mystical Golden knife with which he will fight evil.

So awesome! ;)

Wow!  Sounds so great!  I heard a rumor that Hawkman is going to merge with two really old people, then become a Hawk-God avatar... and wear one glove with tassels! How cool is that?!?!!

I heard a rumor that some writer will come along and try to make sense of all of that and then later on completely screw over the awesomeness that was set up with the new Hawkgirl.

Well, the rumor I heard about the Hawks is even crazier.

Check this out:

Carter Hall is an ALIEN.  His real name is "Katar Hol" and he's supposedly from a planet called Thanagar.  Oh and Thanagar is going to cross over into Adam Strange's strip at some point too.

Pfft.  I'll believe it when I see it.

That's as lame as that rumor about the Atom getting shrinking powers (isn't he short enough?) or Flash getting a new costume which doesn't have a helmet.  As if!

Dude, that would completely suck.  DC shouldn't change their classic characters.

That's what I was thinking, Lauren.

Lots of men marry and have families only to come out later in life. And then there's the whole concept of having a beard to keep up appearances, marriages of convenience/between friends. There are way they could make it work with the history if they actually care about the integrity of said history.

The history is gone, most likely.  From what we saw of Earth 2 (the planet) in Earth 2 (the comic) #1, the history of the JSA and all that from the original Earth-2 has been caught up in the New 52 Reboot.  I doubt that Alan Scott was ever straight in the New 52 Universe.

Although, to be fair, I think James Robinson (the writer) made a good point in his interview on Newsarama, saying that Alan is a handsome, strapping, charismatic leader who people gravitate towards, and that his sexual orientation is a secondary trait to his magnetism, charm, and leadership.

I think Shag's point was just that there was a lot of great history there with the previous version of the character which now will most likely be forgotten about by the vast majority of comics readers since DC is strongly pushing this new angle.

Luke is dead-on.  I'm just too close to the issue.  The JSA is my favorite superhero team/characters.  I'm incapable of being non-biased when it comes to the JSA.

What's been funny about this to me is watching the reaction around the
internets yesterday.

Older people who don't follow the comics are like, "That guy Ryan
Reynolds played was gay?!?"

Younger people are like, "The black Green Lantern guy from the cartoon
is gay?!?"

LOL.

I've had a few people coming running to tell me this news. These are people who look down on comics and see a gay Green Lantern as a victory for comic haters. They are using this information in such a way as to imply everyone who reads comics is gay.

Real classy people.

I don't get that, Shag.  How does having a Green Lantern be a homosexual make all comic readers gay?  Also, I thought Gay Was The New Black this year?  That sounds like some low rent people who have been giving you crap.

And Van, dude, that's freaking hilarious.

I agree Luke. One of the people I'm referring to is a real redneck and has it out for me (not a knock on all rednecks, just this guy).  So he'll use anything he can to try and mock me.  He's a waste of space on our planet.

I don't know how I would react if someone openly mocked me for liking comics.  I mean...I put up with that crap when I was a teenager so...wow.  That freaking sucks.
