Hi;

  I posted this three times due to fat-fingered mistakes, apologies for clogging the list :-(

&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*
  Update: Un-installed terminator, downloaded terminiator, re-installed terminator, now have:

Error from child: tcgetpgrp(3): (Inappropriate ioctl for device)

[Process killed by signal 6 (SIGABRT) --- core dumped.]

&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*

 I just recently moved from Windoze XP SP3 to Windoze 7.

 I installed the most recent Cygwin (the *entire* thing):

CYGWIN_NT-6.1-WOW64 MACHINE_NAME 1.7.10(0.259/5/3) 2012-02-05 12:36 i686 Cygwin

Cygwin was updated from the initial; installation version to the version listed above.

Java version is (build 1.6.0_30-b12)

I installed terminator some while ago just after the first Cygwin install and just after the first Java install.

I have updated Java (the version listed above is the current version as of right now).

I start terminator and I get the following:

java.io.IOException: fork() failed: (Resource temporarily unavailable)
    at terminator.terminal.
PtyProcess.nativeStartProcess(Native Method)
    at terminator.terminal.PtyProcess.access$300(PtyProcess.java:9)
    at terminator.terminal.PtyProcess$1.call(PtyProcess.java:152)
    at terminator.terminal.PtyProcess$1.call(PtyProcess.java:149)
    at java.util.concurrent.FutureTask$Sync.innerRun(Unknown Source)
    at java.util.concurrent.FutureTask.run(Unknown Source)
    at java.util.concurrent.ThreadPoolExecutor$Worker.runTask(Unknown Source)
    at java.util.concurrent.ThreadPoolExecutor$Worker.run(Unknown Source)
    at java.lang.Thread.run(Unknown Source)
[Couldn't initialize terminal: IOException.]

Do I need to re-install terminator and/or get a newer version of terminator?

Thanks
Ken Wolcott

Don't know about the rest of it, but you have to use the older Cygwin tree as "frozen", don't update anything.
See the install instructions, click the link to "problems with Cygwin", and there's a link somewhere to a proper frozen snapshot to download - be aware it can take a while, apparently served from a dynDNS home box, I ran it overnight.

See also the recent resurrection of the older thread that so far seems to be a "won't fix", as the (lead?) developer(s?) prefers not to have to work with Windows.

Perhaps a community volunteer with the skillset to debug the problem will step forward (you? please? 8-)

Please don't let this issue stop you using Terminator, mswin needs a good terminal at least as much as the other platforms, and the fact that the same one can run on all major platforms is just such a great thing. . .

That was my thinking too, tempered only by Ken being perhaps the original reporter of that issue.

That's the end-effect, though I don't think it's a Terminator bug, but a Cygwin one.

Hi Martin;

Well, I thought that this was a new and distinct issue.  I'm happy with mintty (the default terminal emulator that comes with cygwin) other than the fact that the maintainer of mintty refuses to support any X functionality and terminator does just fine with.  So I will have to go to console2 or putty or rely on SecureCRT (proprietary) that my company subsidizes the license fee for me on Windoze.  I really like Linux konsole (KDE), but it doesn't work on Windoze.  So I guess I will stop using terminator now.  Nice application.  Sorry.

Hi Kenneth,

What do you mean by that? Neither mintty nor Terminator are X
applications, so it's not obvious to me.

Kind regards,
Andy

Hi Andy;

  In a mintty terminal applications that rely on X sliently fail.

  In a terminator terminal, they work fine.

  In a SecureCRT terminal, they work fine.

  Perhaps my terminology is flawed.
