Hi,

I'm interested in applying for GSOC this year and i'm really interested in learning Python, I just had a few general questions.

I haven't been able to apply as of yet and i'm just wondering if its too late to do so?
I have minimal to no programming experience with Python but I have extensive knowledge of mathematics and mechanics, what sort of projects would you recommend for me?

Here is a little bit of my background information for you to get an idea of what skills I could offer:

Finishing 3rd year Mechanical/Mechatronics Engineering

Code as a hobby, delved into web development.

Programming:

  • Matlab             (Advanced)
  • Mathematica    (Advanced)
  • C++                 (Experienced)
  • PHP & MySQL (Experienced)
  • HTML & CSS    (Experienced)

Any insight or advice would be appreciated.

-Thomas

Hello,

as far as I can tell it's not too late. Take a look at our ideas page to
learn how to get started (note in particular that there is a patch
requirement), write up a proposal and discuss it here!

Best,
Tom

I see you have rather broad programming experience, which should help
you with Python.
You may have a learning curve with git and github ahead of you. Grab the
Pro Git book (available online), get yourself a Github account, pick an
issue from SymPy's tracker, and start working on that. If you don't hit
a snag (and we're here to help you with that), you should be able to
make it until the deadline and still have a few days buffer left.

It's not too late, but it almost is, so you'll need to do things quickly.

It's tough to say. I recommend reading though the ideas page and
finding things that sound interesting to you. We do have a mechanics
module with some project suggestions relating to it (search the
mailing list for more info on that).
