Solace House (a suicide prevention center in NYC) is teaming up with Sole Purpose Productions (a theater company based in Derry) to provide a free Mental Health Theater Project for the global community. The aim of this project is to raise awareness of
suicide prevention practice using theatre techniques. We will use the Solace House Suicide Prevention Training and the Sole Purpose Productions video of the play ‘Blinkered’ as a starting point to discuss the signs and symptoms of suicide.
‘Blinkered’ by Patricia Byrne is a poignant and insightful play that explores issues of depression and suicide in young people. It won the Special Jury Prize at Origin Theatre’s 1st Irish Festival 2019 in New York. The project will include a live Q&A online
with the actors, writer and director.
Other sessions will include discussions on different aspects of mental health in different and diverse communities. The participants will be invited and guided to devise ‘Scenes of Intervention’ under the direction of Patricia Byrne. These are role plays
which will illustrate how to recognize the signs and symptoms of suicide and how to offer help and guidance.
Sole Purpose Productions (
www.solepurpose.org) is a multi award winning theatre company based in Derry, Northern Ireland. It was set up in 1997 to make new dynamic theatre on social and public issues. It has toured work throughout Ireland, the UK and the
