Me again

My parents are on a 5 yr old iMac and ethernet router, and say that iPlayer performance is laggy/buffering.

They're tempted to upgrade to Infinity, but only if it'll fix performance?

Would it?!?

Or do they need more Ram? Or both?

Can't think it's a new Mac?!?!

Hi Adam

Get them to run a speed test at www.speedtest.net, then see if the results are consistent over a few tests. If the performance is stuttering, that'll be machine speed/capability. If it's buffering then that'll be the internet connection.

I'd always recommend upgrading to Infinity as the speeds are so good, but you may need to upgrade the RAM in your iMac as well. What's the processor speed?

There also a diagnostic page on the iPlayer site which is worth a try:

If they are unable to stream programmes they could try iPlayer Desktop which allows you to download content instead:

Cheers,

Paul.

What's Infinity?

BT infinity : fibre to the local cabinet, then copper to your house. I have BT Infinity (other ISPs offer fibre too) at 80mb down, 20mb up.

On BT? They are upgrding me to infinity or free.. Wait a while and they'll get it for nothing.

As for lag, could be either the connection or the mac but I would start with upgrading.

Can't you download iPlayer stuff? Des that lag also?
