This may seem like a very basic question.
I have a new Virgin cable broadband but the router they supply does not provide a good enough signal around the house (its a bit spread out). I want to put apple wifi base station and extenders around the house. What do I need to get? and what is the difference between an Extreme base station and  an Express base station (apart from 60 quid) and do I need one of each?

Andy,

Not decrying Apple kit but in my experience, their Wireless equipment tends to die after about 14 months. After my 6th Airport Express (I only bought 4, Apple replaced 2) I gave up and went to Devolo kit.

The Devolo kit uses your mains wiring to connect remote Wireless Access Points via a Mini-Base to your router. The only caveat is that all the devolo kit must be behind the same Electricity meter. Also, it really is plug-and-play and each WAP has its own WPA secured network.

When you've chosen, I find the best prices on Amazon.

One word with Devolo adapters, if you're using more than two of them you need to get the security code from the sticker on the 3rd (and each subsequent) box, then use the Devolo software to add the device to the network.

I have had an airport router for years , I bet that has just buggered it! …but honestly I've had no problems with it it, the signal is strong and Ive had it for about 4 years its been on constantly; obviously and i think as a rough estimate it has been reset maybe 10 times….. So you all  know now that the thing is going to go belly up tomorrow after this complimentary email… I should keep my mouth shut and will be touching wood now all tomorrow!!!!!

Regards all

Thanks to all of you for your reply. I have also bought a new iMac and gone for the Time capsule (please don't tell me thats a bad choice) so I will see how I get on with the apple equipment and report back. It should all be installed within the next two weeks or so.
Ray, I am sending your router positive Qi (thats chinese medicine speak for good energy) so no need for the wood.
