persuading Pages to open documents as existing

I've just started using Pages on the Mac but mostly want to edit existing Word documents. What I'd like to do is right-click, open with Pages, edit the document and save. But Pages creates a new document each time and then wants me to save it somewhere so I have to go and hunt for it. I'm in danger of becoming one of those 'why do they have to keep changing everything?' people (also missing 'Save as...').

Is there a way to do this?

Hello Jason,

Pages doesn't let you edit Word documents - what it does is convert your Word document into a Pages document and then let you edit the Pages document. That is why it creates a new document each time. The only way to edit a Word document directly is ... to edit it in Word. When it wants to save it then just press Command-D for Desktop, name it and then file it later wherever you want it to go.

Conversely to get a Word document out requires File > Export > Word ...

Hold down the Option (Alt) key when selecting the File menu in Pages and you will see "Save As ..." listed.

I just tried holding the Option key when clicking File in Pages - and didn't get "save as" - what am I doing wrong? It seemed such a useful tip...

You aren't doing anything wrong, the save as command us replaced by duplicate.

There is a way to get it back, try googling it, I recall an article
possibly in tuaw some time back.

You have to have a document open in Pages, even a blank one, for the Save As option to appear whilst holding alt and clicking File.

I'm running 10.7.5  - is this the latest version? If not then that might be why I don't get "Save As".

10.7.5 is Lion, 10.8.2 is Mountain Lion, their Save As  behaviours are different.

I think I'm a little late to the party here but yes, it's an OS X 10.8 thing, not Pages specifically. I've included a screenshot so you know it's not a fantasy:

I'm running Pages 4.2 and OS X 10.8.2

The whole "Document version" and iCloud workflow/integration is way better in Mountain Lion 10.8 than in Lion.
