How to create new locating strategy for Jquery/Sizzle Selectors in python webdriver client

Hello,

I use Robot Framework with SeleniumRC (Selenium1) for Web UI tests.
But now i want to use Selenium2 (Webdriver) for my Tests.

The Problem is, that we use some sizzle/jquery locators like:
contains, nth(), etc to identify web elements and to check the text
and data on the web page. But Selenium2 doesn't support such selectors
like :contains(''), etc. And now I want to extend the python webdriver
module to support jquery / sizzle locators.

I found a example to support Sizzle selectors with the java webdriver,
and I want to do something similiar for the python webdriver module.

With the java client, it looks like you can just write a subclass of
the by.java to implement new locator strategies.
But in the python client, the by class is just an object class that
contains strings of the supported locating strategies. So where is the
implementation of locating strategies in the python client? Maybe I am
totally wrong
but is that possible that the python module doesn't have it's own
implementation of locating strategies?

I've no idea where to start. Is it enough to extend just the python
module or do i need to extend selenium2 rc to add a new locating
strategy? So any help or other informations to do this would be
helpful!

Actually it's not that Selenium doesn't support them, it's that some
browsers don't support them.

Selenium will attempt to use sizzle locators and if the browser understands
it, it will all work well.

Hi Mark,

first thanks for the fast reply! But when the webdriver executes my robot framework tests it still fails when a sizzle locator is used. Also when i try to use the python client without Robot Framework.

Here is an example python code that throws the error:

Python Client Selenium2.20.0

SeleniumIDE 1.7.2 [it's just used to verify selectors]

Any help to solve this problem would be great!

Sorry my previous assertion was wrong.

 

Selenium will fall back and use sizzle selectors if a browser doesn’t support CSS3:

Hi Mark,

thanks again for the fast reply. I've used the patch (issue 1687) for the java client and it worked. But now i need this
patch of the java client for the python client. And i don't know where i can start to adapt the java client patch also for the python client.
Because for me with my bad programming skills the code looks very different. I mean apart from the language differences.

Any help would be great!

i wrote a simple method for the webdriver python binding, that makes it possible to use sizzle selectors like :contains. It based on the Sizzle patch for the java webdriver binding in the issue 1687[1].
I don't know how it works in detail but with the example below it worked.

Here is a simple script with that the sizzle selector method was tested.

Thanks Vall0n, your code snippet is done nicely such that it will port well to any language binding including the unofficial ones using the JSONWireProtocol and RemoteWebDriver (PHP, Perl).

Thanks Vall0n. That code worked great for sizzle selectors in webdriver but it does not seem to handle regexs in the contains. Is there something I can add to enable regex support for the sizzle contains method

Hi Amadain,

I'am not sure but i think to enable regular expressions in the ":contains" sizzle locator, you need to modify the javascript code in the sizzleLib variable.

But I don't know how and have currently no time to investigate. Sorry.

Hey! This is super great, but for some reasons it locates elements that are not even present on page, for example it returns WebElement for locator "foo:contains('bar')", how can I get None for not present elements?
