Hey Sector67,

Has anyone had any experiences with arduinos clones from ebay? Good ones, bad ones?

Dealextreme has extremely cheap clones.  In some cases they are better than the Italian ones! Haven't heard many bad experiences

The chinese mega clones appear to use an older version of the bootloader that can make them very annoying to flash! The unos are great though and I've used dealextreeme.  Sidenote, the next Arduino board will be ARM.

The chinese Seeeduino from Seeed Studios (3 Es) is good.

Side note #2, I have in my posession 3 ChipKits, which are the Microchip equivalent of (and compatible with) the Arduino, and I've been tasked with giving them away to be used for awesome projects.

Sorry for the lack of info was at the airport.

There was a bug in the bootloader where the arduino would confuse the string "!!!" with a bootloader specific command. Basically you would be unable to upload programs that included that string. It was since fixed but they still flash the old bootloader on the Chinese megas. You can fix it with a reprogranmer.

The bigger issue is that I can't flash Chinese megas from osx. The mega needs to be restarted at a certain point in the flashing process abd the avrdude Mac bin bundled with the arduino software doesn't want any part of it. I don't feel like I've had this issue with genuine megas but its possible its just a mega thing all around.

Oh thanks for the heads up! Also, I can't beat space, but I am starting to hack an inkjet into a semi-automatic glaze tester.
