Hi,

For a product that is collected (not shipped), how would you recommend selecting where (i.e. at which physical address) the thing will be collected. It doesn't seem sensible to create product variants - one for each store location.

This would be needed so that the product can be made available at the relevant store for the customer to collect. The customer would select the store when adding the item to the shopping cart.

Many thanks,
Thomas

I wouldn't use variation, but would add location data (state/city/address) to a custom product model.  Then when the user checks out, they can see the available locations

Do you have variations?  Perhaps location data should be attached to a variation type of product?

The example I'm thinking of is if i wanted to rent a U-Haul trailer... the variation 4x8 is available in X location, and the 6x10 is available in Y location.

Hope that helps!

Dave

Thanks Dave,

There aren't really product variations as such. I just want to get info like this on each line-item in the order:
  1. Do you want documentation with the product
  2. Do you want the product wrapped in bubble wrap
  3. Will you collect it from Location A, B, or C
  4.  Would you like a DVD with instructions...
Each of the questions above would apply to each and every item in the cart (not the whole order.)

I don't want to create product variations (using option groups & option items) for each of the questions, because that just multiplies the number of products, when in fact there is just one unique product.

I've had a look at creating a "Custom Product Module", but I'm having difficulty seeing how this could be useful to me. Not sure if I'm missing the point somewhere.

Many thanks,
Thomas

Thomas,
Now that I think about it my suggestion won't work, sorry about that.

I think you will need to go the configurable product route, and add option/groups for each of those.

Even though it is 'one product', it is not viewed that way from the cart/order objects....  each variation of those options are all considered a unique product..
when an order is all said and done, if one product comes with instructions and the other doesn't, even though they are the same 'product', they are two unique line items in the order...

Perhaps someone else will have a better suggestion, but I'm pretty sure this is your best bet, and how the cart was designed to be used.

Dave
