नमो नमः।
 कुमारसम्भवः कालिदासस्य रचना इति सर्वे जानन्ति। परन्तु तस्मिन् ८ तम सर्गपर्यन्तमेव कालिदासेन रचितम्।, शेषः सर्गाः अन्य आचार्येण रचिताः इति उच्यते। इदं वचनं सत्यं चेत् कालिदासानुसारं तत् काव्यं समाप्तिं प्राप्तवान् वा। 
 समाप्तिसूचकश्लोकः अथवा शब्दः कः अपि अस्ति वा?  
कृपया लिखतु। प्रतीक्षे।

There is really nothing concrete left to tell us why Kumarasambhava terminates suddenly after 8 cantos.  The remaining cantos could have been irretrievably lost, the poet could have been stuck with sudden ill-health, or he could have died - anything is possible.  What is traditionally heard is that Kalidasa was taken by remorse - or that his colleagues etc expressed their displeasure at his depicting so openly erotic scenes between Shankara and Parvati, something  as abhorrent as describing love scenes between parents.
