Thank you for the info do you know if RS supports thumbnails for *.*DWG files (Autocad files)? I did not see this file extension listed in the wiki but it also said ... many more Thanks KAI

I don't think this is supported now, but there's a chance it could be added if someone supported development.

If nothing else, it looks like this company sells commercial software that can convert DWG files to a standard image format like JPEG, and from there the standard tools could do the rest.

There might be other approaches as well.

Just something for you to think about -- ResourceSpace grows because people underwrite software development to meet the particular needs that they have.

its not so much the conversion as the cad file be able to be seen as a preview like a doc file without opening cad full blown. but I assume cad could be launched by simply clicking on the icon after its found in a search correct? The DWG will still be indexed by RS it just will not provide a preview of the file am i correct?

It would still be indexed, and the original file can be downloaded. You also have the option to manually upload a preview image.

Also, just released today is QCAD 3, which claims to have command line tools to convert dwg to bmp, svg, and pdf.

To build on what David said, it might be possible to get someone to integrate qcad support in resourcespace if you fund it.

If i remember correctly CAD allows you to save a preview that travels with the .dwg

It's been a while since I've used CAD, but if you can find out what format the preview is in there may be a way to extract it.

Also, the firm I used to work for would almost always save a version of the file as a jpg or pdf for the use of clients that often do not have a copy of CAD. Perhaps you could use this as the "main" file in RS and set the dwg as an alternative

FWIW - dwg file integration would really expand the possibilities of RS. I know facilities departments that would kill for something like RS for the documentation of structure renovations (which is often paired with lots of photos and paperwork) and the cataloging of service and equipment manuals.

This is exactly were my company is at we have 8 terrabytes or so of data. projects files that contain the .dwg which is also usually converted to pdf files. Weare an Architect firm so we also have all the word documents for the filing sheets for the city planners office and excel budget sheets,  pictures of the building sites and worst of all ALL email pertaining to a project is kept in a .PST file within each project folder then the project manager has this attached to his email in outlook.  This whole system was setup before I came to the company but is is a nightmare in general but they have a fairly decent folder / file structure hence the reason I can not move the data to 'upload" the data into RS. If RS could preview CAD and integrate opening of Outlook .PST files I will post the links to recently release microsoft PST tools.  I think this would be definitely to kill for! But this may be a pipe dream as I am no coder but im sure it would take much work. Thanks KAI

As a company may have several project locations all with different projects numbers
