Good grief! My brother used to play that all the time for me to torment me.
There is a computer shop near where I live. They sell computers, parts and
software. I am not positive on this but I don't think they go out to
businesses or homes to fix stuff. If you want it fixed, you take it to
them. They are very good. I take my computer there for repairs and
upgrades. I have bought assorted things from them including USB drives that
look like cats. Daughter bought two computers from them. I would call them
a computer shop or store in that you can go in there and actually see things
that you can buy.
The place where I got my first computer was not like that at all. It was an
office. A big office but still an office. The only computers in it were
the ones they used for work. There was nothing at all visible for sale.
There was a big dish of free candy and all sorts of free drinks available.
Non alcoholic ones. You sit down, they ask you what (if anything) you'd
like to drink, they bring it to you, then push the candy dish forward. What
they had at the time was a giant bowl of either Skittles or M & Ms. Both
look similar to me at a glance and I only just glanced. I didn't eat any.
I brought in the list of things that I wanted on the computer and handed it
to the person who shall remain nameless. He mentioned the Win95 and said he
didn't know about it. Then referred to a catalog. Yes a hard copy catalog
and not on his computer and said that it would in fact be available in two
month's time. I believe it was actually in 1994 that I was in there. I
could be wrong on that. The order was placed.
The computer was shipped to us something like three months later. With no
modem in it. But apparently however he ordered the unit, it did come with
the modem in it. We actually had to pay extra to have him pull it out. And
he kept it for us because he knew that he would soon be putting it back in.
I don't know much about computers and don't claim to. I am able to find
some things out through my brother because he is a programmer. Doesn't mean
that I understand what he is saying though. The other person who at the
time was sharing the computer with me knew seemingly nothing at all about
them and was only focused on how it would work for playing games. When the
Internet was shown to him, it was a bad time apparently for whatever ISP was
being used. I think it was all dial up in those days and it took about 5
minutes for the computer to go online. Which is why he said to take the
modem out. It was just too slow and he didn't want it. He didn't stick
around to see what "online" meant. It was only after he went online where
he worked that he could see what it was and suddenly he wanted it back.
Keep in mind that we were living on Cape Cod at the time. And no, the
person who sold us the computer was not there. He was in a different state.
The Internet and even computers were a fairly new thing to most of the
people living there at that point in time. I thought it would be easy for
me to get a POS job there. Nope. In fact most of the stores didn't even
have a POS system yet. ATMs were even a new thing to them and not all banks
had them. Those were different days.
