I had mounted this Platrack on another bike for a while, and had to cut the struts, so when it came time to put it on my Bombadil, the struts were too short to reach the dropouts. Someone else had posted something about bending the struts to reach the fork eyelets that are used for the Mini/Marks rack, but since the Bombadil has those nifty mid-fork mounts, I thought I'd give it a try. Good news is: no strut bending required! I did have to tweak the mount on the rack itself by a mere couple degrees just to make it line up perfectly, (using a crescent wrench  - kind of like the old trick to toe-in brake pads on cheap calipers) but I could have simply left it as is and tightened the bolts to bring it all into alignment.

Bottom line is it works great, and frees up the dropout for whatever other junk I'll bolt on someday. And it looks good. And it's lighter. ; )

p.s. Waiting for the Marathon Supremes to show up this week, hence the naked MA40s.

Great setup!

Can you post some photos of the compete bike? I'm thinking of having my Hunqapillar repainted and am considering silver... Would like to get a sense for the complete look of the bike in silver.

Here you go Rene - the full set:

I've had a number of Silver bikes over the years - still have three. They look good with silver/black components, and you can jazz things up with bar-tape, cable housing, bags etc. I'm working on a drop-bar variant for the Bombadil at the moment, and will add red bar tape and housings.

Have fun with the re-paint.

That's great! I wish my Hilsen had mid fork braze-ons. I was thinking
this morning that maybe next year I'll get the Hilsen repainted and
some braze-ons like that added.

I was wondering if something like that would work. I think I'd try it
if I knew I could get extra struts from RBW. It doesn't appear they're
even selling the Plat Rack anymore. Hopefully they're just out of it.
I think it's a good design. I know there was some mention of Mark
working on a new front rack, perhaps it'll be something along these
lines except all in one.

I got an extra set of 42cm struts just in case. Didn't need 'em. You are welcome to them if you try it and it doesn't work out.

Thanks! I'll keep you posted.

I need to bend the struts for my Nitto Top Rack. I'll probably do that
first. Because of wear the braze-ons are on my Hilsen the rack sits
much higher than needed.

I still see the Platrack on the Riv site, so it looks like they might have 'em for now. Also noticed that Ben's in Milwaukee carries them too. Same for the long struts. And thanks Brian, for the inspiration!

And for all you other rack-hackers out there, there's a group for that on Flickr:  http://tinyurl.com/cquypzm

Yeah, I noticed that too. It seems like they weren't on for a while.
But they are listed as "discontinued". Also, the Platrack SlickerSack
is no longer on the site. All this makes me think that the new rack
Grant hinted at a few blug post ago will be similar.

That's beautiful. Silver is definitely a strong contender... With the red labels.

Thanks!

Brian,

I always love the color of your AHH when I see a picture of it... Great job on the Platrack setup!
