Sometimes if you're patient enough and wait long enough good things come your way.  This is the case (in my case, anyway) with Riv's new platform pedal offering from VIP.  When I spied these on their web catalog I ordered a pair right away and have not been disappointed with them in any way - they are exactly what Riv (Grant?) describes them to be.  I replaced the cheap, clunky old MoSH BMX pedals on my Rambouillet and went for a test spin.  They do, indeed, have a much lower profile and the pedaling is much, much smoother presumably due to higher quality axles and bearings.  I also noticed that the exposed threads on the pins that are screwed into these pedals tend to grip much better than the smooth-ended pins in my old ones.  But then there was one more surprise:  all of the creaking and other racket I couldn't exactly identify in my drive train has disappeared!  Riv also offers these pedals at around the same price as any of the other Web retailers so no need to look anyplace else.

The proliferation of high quality "BMX style" pedals has been one of the best new trends in cycling in the last couple years, in my opinion. I'm partial to the Sun Ringle Zuzu because they're lotsa bang for the buck, but the various VP pedals are really nice.

I have a new pair of red magnesium platforms and took them for 2 rides before switching them out for the MLK touring pedals. I felt like there was just TOO much contact for me feet and they were very uncomfortable.

I know it's not supposed to matter but can I ask what shoes you were wearing?

I cycle in run-of-the-mill ASICS running shoes.

Thank you for the review George. I have been coveting these pedals since they were introduced on the Rivendell site and happened to order them yesterday. Interestingly they are destined to replace the Mosh pedals on my Salsa mountain bike. They look like great pedals. I am quite happy with the low-dollar Mosh and plan to move them to the Pugsley.

Good to know. I'm tempted to get some but first I'm gonna try putting some pedal spikes in my Grip Kings. Didn't Grant say a while back that there was gonna be GKs with better bearings and spikes? Maybe I'm wrong. I actually like that the GKs have reflectors so I wanna stick with them. I can't believe I just said that. When I first got them I wasn't a fan of the reflectors.

I just installed a pair of Hillbubba’s modification to a set of Grip King pedals on my Mystery Bike (the mod is extremely easy, and provides substantial additional platform area and support with negligible widening of the pedal platform), and discovered that (contrary to Bill’s instructions) the reflectors do not have to be removed and can be preserved.  Since I, too, like having the reflectors, I kept them.  LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the Hillbubba mod, BTW.  Extremely comfortable (even more than the stock GK, especially if you have wide feet), and no downsides at all that I can see.

I'm equally pleased with the new pedals on my QuickBeam. Whether riding fixed, or on the freewheel, they're an improvement over the older MKS RX-1 pedals with toe clips I had been using. I thought I would need clips when riding fixed, but... not so much. I'm "just riding" by mashing down, and the main thing the clips were giving me was consistent placement of my foot on the pedal. But I quickly find the right spot for my feet on the VP pedals, and the spikes seem to help hold my shoes right there. I'm going to get a pair for my wife's B'Stone, and for my RBW LongLow as well.

Appreciate all the rider comments out in the field.  Given the lower profile, would assume I would have to lower my saddle slightly to compensate.  Anyone know exactly how many mm difference there is between the VP Gripster and MKS Touring?

May have to give these a try, though I wish they still came in bright silver (as shown in the RBW pedal comparison video as opposed to the dark grey)...

I dropped my saddle a smidge, since I could feel the difference in reach from saddle to pedal.

And they're AGAIN sold out at RBW!
